my cd-r(w) drive is VERY loud, ALL the time..not just when writing, even if I'm just reading a CD. My dvd-rom drive is as well...could the mounting have anything to do with this, or am I just not used to such powerful hardware?

Um... which drive are you talking about and to what extent is the noise? If rattling or grumbling, check the mounting to make sure screws are tight. Note that some drive are noisier than others. Or this problem may be a combination of both. It's very hard to tell from such vague information, but hope this helps.

My creative 48x sounds like an airplane trying to take off when it spins up, on the other hand, my Sony CRX-145E 10x/4x/32x is very quiet. Basically, some drives are just loud...
