I have built a storage system with 8 disks. When the system is turned on it creates a rising and falling deep droning sound. Is this bad for the disks? Should I be looking at other ways to mount them in the case other than screwing them in?
Then the noise is normal; ideally you'd use a quality case with plastic HDD holders to prevent vibrations. As an example, the NZXT Source 530 would have been better since all drives are mounted in their own holder.
How often is it powered on? Do all drives start at the same time? What case are you using? With that type of storage I'd presume the system is on 24x7.

Its on 24/7 and i assume all the drives start at the same time?
I'm using the NZXT 210 elite case with a Coolermaster STB-3T4-E3-GP (Three 5.1/4" bays to four 3.5" bays adapter).
I have four WD blue drives and four WD red drives currently inside the case all screwed in since the "quick release" holders were too loose for my liking.
