Non Sli Multi GPU Stuttering

So I recently upgraded to a gtx 1080 fe from my previous gtx 970. I have both cards in my system now, using the 1080 to drive my gaming monitor and the 970 to drive my 2 accessory monitors. Ever since going to this config (i used to have all 3 monitors off the 970) I've had stuttering problems in most games. AC origins, BF1, Vermintide 2, etc. The frame rate will be fine then the game will have a minifreeze for a split second before continuing. Anyone know what the cause might be? Is this a problem with the 1080 or just a peculiarity with running multi gpus?

Ryzen 1700x
Gtx 1080 fe
Gtx 970 msi 100me
16 gb ddr4
850 watt psu

PS temperatures look fine during usage btw

Remove gtx 970, reinstall geforce drivers (clean install option).

BTW - what motherboard are you using? It's possible, you have installed gtx 1080 into reduced bandwidth pcie slot.

removed 970 and reinstalled the drivers with the clean option, same problems. The board is ax370 gaming k5.
