Non USB Mouse Freezes at random

Can anyone give me pointers on how to eliminate random mouse freezes on this ole' Vista system? I'm using a non USB Cabled Mouse, it's the older cable (green colored) plug pin type. All updates, inclusive of Service Pack 2 are installed. Any help would be appreciated.
