Somewhat confused by supplied power cables and which to use for the 8-PIN IN on my GTX 1080.

I have several cables with a 6+2 on one end and only 7pin on the other.

I don't have any that are 8 pin on both ends.

Am I correct in assuming that the 6+2 should plug in to my GPU, and the 7 pin into my PSU?

Can anything 'bad' happen if this is reversed?

Solution
You assume correctly.

PCIe power cables carry 12V, Ground, and one signal I believe (To let the receiving circuitry know the proper cable is connected)

Technically it could be done with as few as three wires, but they would then need to be quite thick to and be hard to bend.
