Noob GPU OC Question

So I want to try my hand at GPU overclocking, I've done some research and understand the basics. There is one thing I am a little confused on, within the Nvidia control panel do i need to make sure that the power management mode is set to maximum performance rather then optimal or adaptive? Its a EVGA 1070 SC.

I was planning on using Afterburner, but Ive seen conflicting reports that you need to make sure that the Nvidia Control panel is set to Maximum Performance. Im just confused on how overclocking works with the whole boost clock stuff nowadays.

Did a little more research and benchmarking with Heaven at stock speed clock speeds and found that with GPU boost going the card is running at 2000 mhz. Ive seen what some people managed to OC to and the little I gain isn't worth it.

Usually we only oc if we need to If you like the FPS, don't need to. Gain is also limited in some way.

Basically Ive found at least for my card is that the GPU boost is pushing the card close to its limits of stability. Some were able to get an extra 100 but most maybe 30 more mhz then the boost is doing so I figure ill just be happy with leaving it alone for stability.
