Hello all,

I am a noob PC builder who just built his first PC. I went for top of the line components as I am starting out in software development, enjoy gaming recreationally, and am interested in trying my hand at video/music editing and other trades that require high computing power.

Despite having turned XMP on, I am still only getting the original 2400 Mhz out of the box functionality and am not sure what the issue is. So far I have entered the BIOS several times, enabling and disabling XMP. I have also updated the BIOS to the most recent state as provided by GIGABYTE. Not sure what left to do to try to get the 4800 Mhz I paid for.

A list of the main components used in question below:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X (link to manufacturer site)

Motherboard: Gigabyte X570S AERO G ATX AM4 Motherboard (link to manufacturer site)

Memory: XTREEM DDR4 DESKTOP MEMORY (link to manufacturer site), 4 x 8 GB (I bought two of these 2 x 8GB sticks of RAM, yielding 4 x 8GB identical sticks of RAM.)

- Specifications:
SeriesXTREEM
Module Type288 Pin Unbuffered DIMM Non ECC
Frequency4800 Mhz
LatencyCL 20-28-28-48
Capacity8GB X 2
Data Transfer Bandwidth38,400 MB/s (PC4 38400)
Voltage1.5 V
Dimensions48(H) x 134(L) x 9(W)mm

Please help me figure out where I went wrong! Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

For the sake of relevance, can you state what BIOS version you're on at the time of writing? Are you seeing the speeds mention in CPU-Z? If so, 2400MHz showing up in DRAM frequency, memory tab, times 2 = 4800MHz

BIOS version is F4a, here is the link to the BIOS versions offered by GIGABYTE for the X570S Aero G motherboard: link.

As for CPU-Z, it appears the opposite affect is happening (1200 MHz showing up in DRAM frequency, memory tab, times 2 = 2400 MHz). I am unable to attach the screenshot I have taken as this website has identified it as spam and the text file is ridiculously long, so here are the important/relevant parts of it:

There's a couple things that could be going on... first thing may be pedantic but worth repeating: DDR4 is double data rate so 4800 is the transaction rate, the actual clock speed is 2400Mhz. Many utilities report out the clock speed, not the transaction rate, so you have to clear that up first.

Second: 4800 is a very high memory overclock. It will almost definitely require some tweaking, not just setting XMP (or DOCP depending). At the very least you'll probably need to de-sync the IF. Probably also set a manual DRAM voltage much higher than you think necessary, at least at first until you get stable operation and you can find the lowest voltage that it will stay stable. And all this assumes the IMC of your specific CPU is even capable of 4800Mtps data rates: as always you're at the mercy of the silicon Gods with these things.
