I recently got a nortel contivity 100 for free, and have been able to use as an ethernet switch, which is pretty cool, but I have no idea what it was really meant for or how to set it up. So does anyone here know anything about it?

You could use it to prop the door open or as a step to reach a high cabinet. :)

It is old old old. That is a old bay networks product that nortel acquired back in the late 1990's if I remember right. It is a very poor switch first it is only 10/100 and then it is not even as fast as a $5 8 port 10/100 switch. It used to run IPSEC but I suspect it does not support any of the newer options like AES for encryption or the support of NATT. This pretty much makes it unusable as a VPN box.

As I suspect you know nortel is long gone and a bay systems stuff was not real popular even when nortel was doing ok.
