Not enough pins on my power supply

My mobo has both an 8 pin connector and a 4 pin connector but my psu only has 8 pins can I just leave the 4 pin empty or will I need an 8 pin to 4 pin adapter of some kind.

If I understand the manual correctly, it should be fine to connect only the 8-pin connector and leave the 4-pin one free.
This will, of course, depend on if you plan over clocking or not. I'd suggest updating your PSU to one that has the relevant connectors if you do plan to over clock.

You can use adapter: PCIE 8pin to 4+4 EPS/ATX12V or
PCIE 6pin to 4+4 EPS/ATX12V.

That psu has an 8 pin connector. You sure you didn't just use the wrong cable on the psu?
