Having not played in over 2 years and having closed my account is Ultima
Online as good as it used to be. I have not kept up with what as gone on as
far as updates and story lines go. Do I need to buy any new updates from the
shops or does it just require downloads if I start up again. I did
originally start out with Renaissance then bought Third Dawn for the 3-D, do
people still play with the old 2-D version.

Many thanks for all your feed back.

A lot has changed, but it's still a great game. You will need to buy the
latest expansion "Ultima Online: Age of Shadows". You still have the option
of 2D or 3D, most people play 2D still.

If you go to www.uo.com they have a deal going on where you
can reopen your old account for 2 weeks for free. I believe they also
have a link to a place where you can download the latest expansion
if you decide to stay.

Most people still use the old 2-D version. The 3D just never quite
caught on.

From what I have been reading here the last couple of years 2-D is the
primary client.

3-D graphics have been messed up by OSI for some reason and the 3-D client
has never ran well IMO. The most obivious graphic mutilation is your
character who looks to be 2/3 legs with a scrunched down torso & head.

I have bought all the new releases and don't know if the downloads will
provide it all or not.

The last expansion AoS made the game more magic item oriented than skill
oriented. Treasure was halved and damage from monsters at melee ranges got
boosted. If you play a melee character & solo hunt plan on backing off to
bandage a lot. Browse Stratics for info on armor & all. The game changed
radically play-wise with AoS. It's not what it was before.

Housing phase three finally happened and houses that belonged to closed
accounts finally fell and are supposed to time out and fall for that reason
in the future. Your odds of finding a spot for a small house outside of
gankerland is pretty good these days.

Fel is even deader now than it used to be. I do occasional ganker hunts and
thats about the only players you find on that facet these days.

Ilsheanar is a decent land additon to the game with good hunting & no
housing. This was probably the best addition to the game I've seen in my
four years here.

Malas is pretty much a housing subdivision that came with AoS. Not much else
worth mentioning about it other than the dungeon Doom. Doom is appropiately
named. OOOooOOOooo <g>

I would recommend trying the 15 day free trail UO offers which lets you run
around just Trammel from what I hear and get a feel for the combat changes
AoS made. If you like those then get the AoS expansion and check out the
rest.

The next expansion is supposed to be for the PvP players and have an
Oriental flavor to it.

Nearly all the old bugs are still unfixed but are merely annoyances. The
game is playable other than the client ticking off Windows XP now & then and
shutting down on you in combat.

Pets now bond to you after a week of feeding and will follow using Recall,
and once bonded, appear as ghosts after dieing that can be rezzed by a
player tamer. Gate is no longer needed for pack animals or tamer's pets. A
nice feature if you like more laid-back craftsman play and forage for
resources. Resources in Fel are double what they are in the other facets but
your odds of getting home with them are lousy enough to make the double
amounts not worth bothering with.

The game is still good. Not as good IMO, and though I have left briefly
twice in irritation , I am still here. It's a rare game these days that has
the range of play UO has. You can do anything from herding sheep <yawn> to
high intensity kill-or-be-killed ganker hunting. Whatever style of play your
in the mood for when you log in, UO probably has it. :)

Save your money. UO2D graphics are outdated. The game is nothing more then
a bunch of scammers anyways.

I'd avice you to download Age of Shadows, try it out, and then register.
I had a ton of trouble to get a hold of AoS in a store, and to upload my
account, so i think downloading it is easier.

3D and 2D: its all dependent on if you played for a long time yes or no.
I recently restarted (after been gone for 3 years) and by accident started
with 3D
and I love it.
I didnt even know I had 3D installed, but when I recently tried 2D, it was
horrible, I cant even
imagine people play 2D.😛
Yet people that played for a long time, swear its better.

Is that still true? What's the ratio of 2D to 3D players like? I have both
clients installed, can't decide which I like more. More backpack space in
the 3D client... 🙂

That's why your pets never die even doing level 3 treasure chests, I
guess. ;PPP

Now we know why you couldn't open certain Option Gump tabs - you were
using the screwy 3D client.

Pffft they were untrained pets.😛

Uhm I can open all those tabs fine. It just works a bit different in 3D.
The tabs are named different etc.

Serious: if youve been gone from the game as I was, and you start in 3D, you
cant believe people
still play in 2D.
Everything just looks horrible.😛

That's your opinion, many of us think the 3D graphics look horrible.
I also hate the sensation of movement when riding a horse, or mare
in 3D. Its like a rocking chair, on air jets. A rocking gliding motion.
The characters are so gross I cant relate to them.

I would much rather have the "cartoon" characters than the ugly
3D ones with triangle shaped feet, legs twice too long for the body,
and hair that looks like it has not been washed for a year.
"Long hair" that does not even come to the shoulder, that back side
of the female characters is "still" far too big for the body. Clothes
hang like rags on them.

You have very low standards for your art work if you like UO 3D
art. What kind of art do you have in your home? Myself, I like
art done by someone with a little bit of talent.

Just MHO,

*chuckle*

Its amazing how someone manages to even turn someone's dislike for 2D, into
a silly insult.

Anyway: I like art in games realistic. When I look at my Nightmare in 2D its
a silly cartoon like
not even horse-like creature, when in 3D its a very pretty deep black
horse... Its also somewhat 2x as big as it is in 2D..

It actually looks like a fierce horse..*boggle*

Same goes for the monsters in 3D: they look better/ prettier etc IMO then in
2D,
but I guess its just what you prefer eh.

Agreed. I saw 3d Once and never opened it again. OSI got royally
ripped off by the artists they hired for that project. That's what you
get when you hire an Impressionest!

Well, first of all, any "Nightmare" would be fictional, not "real".

Second, who ever did the art for the horses, must have never even
seen a horse. There is nothing realistic about them. I own horses,
and have all my life, and I am also a fair artist. I know every conformation
of a horse. Many different breads of horses, in fact.

LOL, disagree totally. Their legs are way too long, they are way too
skinny, their but is way too big. Talk about "cartoon", now 3D is far
more "cartoon" than 2D.

I will agree on some of the monsters. They did a job on "some" of them.

When I know what can be done with computer art, it makes me cry
to look at the poor job they did in UO.

It's too bad they didn't get some folks like the ones who did the Dungeon
Siege graphics. Those are 3D but aren't like a bunch of sheets draped
over the furniture.

I guess it won't much matter now - didn't they say that they were finally
adding 2D art and that the reason they hadn't before is that they lost the
original artwork? I guess for pre-rendered 2D graphics it takes a lot
more effort than just slapping a texture over a stick figure.

It makes me wonder if you've ever even tried 3D.
Yes the horses in 2D dont look like horses at all. They look like little
toys, or the little plastic horses you'd
play with as kid.
Now my nightmare in 3D.....thats a horse!!!

And I know what a horse looks like.:)

Well, neither 2D or 3D are very good, at todays standards.
But when the game came out, I didnt think it was all that bad.
All you had back then was Meridian 59 and some other obscure mmorpg.
Ive always enjoyed Ultima's graphics, even those of UO.

But Ill admit I never am into games for the graphics, since IMO even the eye
of the beholder series is still way
better then most todays rpgs.

Hehe, That would have cost REAL money! :)
