Not stable at stock speeds.

Alright... I'm getting super upset with my rig. I'm running 4x512 sticks of old centon ddr400, Asus A8N-SLI and a 4600 X2 manchester. I cant get it to pass super pi at stock speeds. I tried taking out two sticks and still incorrect checksum.

What the heck is going on? It does pass prime 95 (I tested for like an hour and half) at stocks speeds.

I need help/advice!
 
First run memtest. If it passes, then your ram is good.

Next run prime95 using blend test. Run for 8hours. If it passes, your ram is stable.

Finally, run prime95 using small FFT's for 6hours. If that passes, your cpu is stable.
 
Alright... Here is the thing:

with these settings I passed prime95 (not a blend test) for 1 hour without error. I ran two instances of prime (one for each core) and divided the ram between the two instances. I ran it on custom with everything default except "memory to use" was set to 800 for each application of the program. I dont know if this is the best way to run prime but I wanted it to stress both cores and I read that's how you do it... is this right?

I have not ran memtest because I dont know how to do it.

My temps at load are around 59 C... I think it's kind of high and tried to make my fan run faster in bios but not sure if I'm doing that right. I went to Q-fan control and set target temp to 51 (lowest I could) to see if it would bump up the fan speed when going above that temp. Didnt notice it working harder though.

I'm thinking that this is either a stable overclock (will do a long burn in of prime later) or that my memory and cpu are toast. I was playing BF2 yesterday and it crashed to desktop (first time it crashed since overclocked) and that really makes me wonder.

Any more suggestions?
 

Cool... i'll try an older version. I will also bump up volts .1

When should I stop bumping volts. It's at 2.6 right now... what should be the max volts until I call it quits?
 
Alright... I bumped volts up to 2.7 and still on the 1M test (35 seconds) I get an incorrect checksum. I dont know of any older mod that I could get nor where to get it. Why wouldnt it work with the newer mod?
I dont understand why it's not stable considering it's running fine on prime95. Right now i'm overclocked to 2.74 from 2.4 but like I said I wasnt passing at stocks speeds anyway. I think it might have something to do with the program. I tried reinstalling program too.

Maybe i'm running program wrong?
 
My memory sucks... I have a good feeling that's what's keeping me from a stable overclock and passing super pi. It sucks that I'm asking advice on overclocking an old as dirt system. 4600+ X2s used to be fast! Now a Q6600 o'cd to 3.6 leaves me in the dust!

I think I'm about to give up on this project unless I can find an old friend willing to sell me some high performance memory for cheap. Like 2x1 mushkin or xms.
 

system age has no bearing on the joy of overclocking ... Remember the Seinfeld episode where he was buying a new car and Kramer and George came along, Kramer went on a test drive? The test drive turned into seeing how low on gas they could go .. Well, overclocking is like that, that feeling. It doesn't matter what you do it on ...

I'm currently doing my first overclocking on my first home build. What a rush!

Just so you all know... I blew this system up!!! Bought all new!

And guess what? My brand spanking new system still says in super pi: invalid checksum! What's up with that?
 
Start by using memtest86+. It doesn't even need an OS to run -- bootable floppy and CD images are available for free download. Just burn the image, then boot from it (no settings to set - it just runs). Make sure you get through at least a couple of complete passes without any errors.
Next, after you install Win, try something like Orthos (or other PRIME95 equivalent that automatically loads both cores and automatically checks for errors; choose the "blend" test to stress BOTH CPU and RAM). Run it for a couple of hours to make sure the system is reasonably stable and not overheating. Then, do a shakedown test and run Orthos (or equiv) in "small FFT" mode O/N. Monitor temps for at least the first hour. If no errors in that, repeat O/N, but running "blend" mode to test RAM, too. Again, monitor temps for at least the first hour.
 
Alright... good advice on how to check stablility of a system. I have never used Orthos and dont really see the need to when I am Prime95 stable.
Memtest... I cant burn to disc or floppy from my computer because it wont let me due to having 64bit o/s. But I dont really care because once again i'm prime95 stable.
Here is the thing about super pi... I was looking through people's posts of overclocks and checking the validater on xtremesystems.org and every one I checked it said invalid checksum... so either super pi is unreliable, everyone's systems are unstable, or I'm just reading it wrong or entering the info wrong every time... I dont know!
