not sure if hdd is dying or it's just the sata cable or even the mobo

i have a 1tb hitachi desk star hdd. its a little over a year old. about 6 months ago it started giving me the click of death and lagging but not crashing.

i powered it down and checked everything out. re connected the cable and things and it stopped doing it. about a week ago it started doing it again really bad to the point that windows started giving the hard drive error screen.

i repeated what i did the first time even using a different sata port on the mobo and it's working fine again. am i just delaying the inevitable here and it is failing or would a faulty cable/sata port cause this sort of thing.

i'm asking since i haven't had a blue screen of death or any sort of crash related to the drive. i feel dumb anyway buying another death star as my first one i had years back did fail.

Hi there smooth_cannibal,

After you are facing some issues with your HDD, I would advise you to back up the crucial data that is stored on it until you sort them out.
Given the fact that the testing tool shows that the drive is healthy, then most probably you had these lags due to faulty SATA port or cables.
I would advise you to connect the drive with different cables and wait for a while to see whether the issue will persist when the drive is connected to the other SATA port.
It may be a good idea to provide the S.M.A.R.T. results.

yeah bad port or cable is what i am thinking as it is not doing it again. when it did start showing symptoms the 2nd time i did start to worry since it was way worse than before. it could be my cable management. my psu has a tons of wires and they are pretty long making it hard to get them routed well inside my mini tower that doesn't have anyway to hide the excess. they are all just sort of in a big lump in the middle so over time it could cause the sata plug to not seat properly.
