Hey guys. I'm looking to upgrade my i3 6100 in the next month to something with a bit more of a kick in it to play games at 1440p with a new monitor I'm getting like GTA V, ESO, BF1 etc. What would you guys recommend for a CPU, preferably Intel as I have a Gigabyte h110M-S2H motherboard (shite, i know).

My pc use is for college work, gaming, (some cpu intensive games like ESO), movie watching and sometimes a little bit of video editing. Budget is not an issue for my CPU (it's ~£500), but any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Specs:
GTX 1060 6GB
Intel i3 6100 3.7GHz
8GB 2333MHz DDR4 ram (I think)
Gigabyte m-atx mobo
550W PSU
Hyper 212 Evo cpu cooler
5 fans
Don't think there's anything else that could be useful

Solution
Just update the BIOS of your current motherboard to version F20 and it would be compatible with the Kaby-Lake processors. Either the I5-7600 or the I7-7700 would be my recommendation.

1440p with a 1060 isn't the wisest choice if you want to play in ultra...

If you wanna kick in some gaming performance in, get either the 6500 as mentioned above, a 6600 or 6600K (You don't need to overclock it to benefit from it's faster clock speed). Those are the best Skylake CPUs for gaming.

For better overall experience, a i7 is strongly advised, the 6700 being a nice option as well.

Would you recommend the 6700, or would you recommend switching to a z270 mobo and getting an i5 7600k?

Gaming wise, the second option is much better, no doubt.
If you can, sell your MOBO + CPU and grab that to at least have a few cash-back from it.
