LIke the title says, when the AC/DC adapter is plugged in the laptop power on and presents a bios error with one long beep and two short beeps (presumably video card problems), lights and coolers on but no video. When on battery alone it works and enters Windows like it should do.

Unfortunatelly my batery is dead and only lasts a minute, so even a backup is hard to do right now. When I power on the computer on battery, the boot is ongoing normally, if I plug the AC adapter the video imediatelly turns off and the computer remains unresponsive, lights and coolers on (the same failure). So clearly the error only happens with the AC plugged in.

I can open up the laptop if needed, already done it one time. I have a cheap digital multimeter and the 19V AC adapter is marking 19.6V, it charges normally the almost dead battery, confirmed by the battery charging lights on the laptop. Based on that I dont think the problem is the adapter itself, but something inside the laptop that runs after the Power Jack Plug.

This error was not sudden, it began slowly with crashes and it was increasing day by day until the computer no longer functions with the adapter plugged in. I thought my videocard was dead until I discover by accident the computer still functions on battery. My battery is almost dead, I did not use the laptop on battery for more than a year.

I would apreciate any help. Thx.

Hi,

There are few test you can try to identify the issue.
1. Try another AC adapter that has the same voltage with the original one.
2. Remove the battery and just boot it up using the AC adapter only.
3. Connect an external monitor when the laptop is on but no display as you mentioned and see if you'll get any display from it.

If not 100% sure but i'm going for the AC adapter being faulty.

Hi, thx for the reply.

I did not get my hands into a similar AC adapter yet to test, but the reason I dont think the AC is the problem, is that still charges the almost dead battery and has normal voltage on the multimeter (without load on, but still its 19.6V, should be 19V). Taking off the battery and powering on AC alone also does not help.

I already plugged in an external monitor and when the problem happened the external monitor also dies. When I did the test I was very sure the video card was dead, but then latter I realize the computer still functioned on battery alone.

I oppened up the laptop yesterday to make sure the AC jack was firm and passing the voltage through, and it was normal. Beyond that I dont have knowledge in eletronics to test aditional circuits.
