Hello guys,
I have a very difficult problem, and I hope someone has some tips. I have 6 devices in my home network, 5 connected to wifi (2 notebooks, 2 smartphones, 1 tablet). The router is an Arris TG862. Everything was ok * (see notes) when my father said that his notebook was not connecting to internet, but all other devices were ok.
I looked at his notebook and the wifi connection was off (A Dell Inspiron 14, windows 8.1), and I selected to connect to the network again, but it failed. Sometimes it would say that the password was wrong (and I know it was correct) and sometimes would immediately fail. Things I tried:
- Turn off and on (unplugged energy cable) the arris router
- Disable and re enable wifi adapter on notebook and tried again
- Ran the Ubuntu Desktop 14.04 live mode and IT WORKED
- reinstall network adapter, getting the last one from Dell website
- reinstall windows keeping personal files
- format windows partition and re install windows 8.1 with another cd that I had and worked before
- Installed all windows updates
- Created a wifi hotspot using my android smartphone and tried to connect the Dell notebook to it, but it failed (mine notebook connected ok)
- Changed router security to open (no password) to see if was a password issue, but the connection was still failing
Then, I had an ideia to try to configure another router I have (tp-link TL-WR740N) as an wds/repeater and connect the laptop with cable, as solution to keep him access to internet. I followed some tutorials to turn on this router wds mode, but it was also failing to connect to my arris router.
So, I tried something different, I connected a LAN cable from the arris, to the WAN port of the Tp-LINK, and configure the TP-LINK with the same arris configuration, but with a different wireless network name...
And then it worked.
So this is my current solution, but I still want to find out how to not depend on this additional router.
It seems to me that both devices have some kind of conflict, because I tried to change everything in the notebook, but it is the only device that is not able to access the arris (although it works with ubuntu), and also was not able to connect to my android hotspot that I tested. But at the end, the same basic wireless configuration using other router is ok....
The only thing is different is the wireless network name, and channel.
Does anyone know why this could be happening?
Thanks
*Note: Sometimes when my tablet crashed (Android), and rebooted, it would not be able to connect to the wifi again. What I did in these cases was to unplug and plug again the arris router from the energy, and it would connect again, or sometimes rebooting the tablet would also work.
