Notebook screen runs on 60hz, can i reach 144hz using a monitor?

Hello, guys! I have an Avell notebook (brazillian company) specific for gaming, it's a bit old already, but it's holding on. I'm trying to start using a monitor to play, as i've heard the 144hz makes all the difference in the world for gaming. The built-in screen on my notebook runs at 60 FPS, 60hz. I have a GeForce GTX 870M 3GB and my computer has a DisplayPort and a Mini DisplayPort. Can i achieve 144hz by pluging a monitor on the DP? Thank you kindly!

If the monitor is compatible and your laptop can reach that level of performance, I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work.
