Nothing coming up on my monitor

Finished with my build. Now I need to install windows. One problem, the computer is operational, however nothing is showing up on the monitor.

Anyone know what’s wrong?

The monitor is connected to the motherboard via vga.

Also, earlier today you mentioned an Intel CPU and another time a video card. Now you list an AMD based rig. What are we working with here?

  HDD
  2x4 gb ram sticks
  Intel stock cooler
  2x Case fans.

If the display is connected to the motherboard video connections, you need to change the display connection to one of the video card's ports.

I'll try and explain it the best as I can.

The monitor is connected to the motherboard via vga cable.

I finished installing all of my components for my first build. Now what I am trying to do is install windows. The first time I turned my computer on was to make sure that it is working. When I see that the motherboard lights turned on, all three fans were spinning (the gpu fans weren't spinning, however I found out they only spin when they reach a certain temp), and the power button lights turned on I knew I did something right. One thing I noticed was that the system stopped for a second and then turn on again. I thought that was just something that happens on the first boot. Nothing was displaying on the monitor either. So I pressed the power button to shut it off.

The 2nd try, I inserted the usb with the files I needed to install windows. It did the same thing turn on, few seconds later turn off, then on. Nothing appeared on the screen. Now I couldn't turn off the computer by just pressing the power button. I even try holding it down. It resulted me having to switch off the psu.

The next few tries the same results. I followed the TechSource recent "How to build a gaming pc" tutorial step by step. The only thing that I found different was the smaller "usb" cable. I only have the big blue "usb 3.0" cable for the front ports.

And I couldn't connect my monitor to my graphics card. I need a HDMI for it.

You should connect the monitor to the GPU not the motherboard. Otherwise you aren't going to get any picture on the screen. You are using a dedicated GPU and it is the one providing the picture. If you want to use the integrated Intel iGPU you should plug the display to the motherboard, as you are doing right now, but in that case you have to remove/uninstall the dedicated PCIe GPU from the motherboard. So as you can see you have 2 options either get a new display cable (you can also use a VGA adapter), which is obviously the preferred option (since you want to use that GPU) or remove the GPU and you'll get picture from the motherboard. You are correct. I actually found that out yesterday. The monitor that I was using doesn't support HDMI. I have to order in a new monitor + HDMI cables.

That is actually going to be hard to remove. My GTX 1050 has a plastic armor which basically covered the PCI -e slot latch.

The monitor I was originally using was the 2016 version of the AOC - 21.5" IPS LED HD Monitor that does not have a HDMI input.

The new monitor I'm getting is the 2018 version AOC - 21.5" IPS LED HD Monitor.
