these things are cute for places like germany where you could travel along a highway for most of the time.
not the same beast for america where almost all of the travel is stop and go.
the same way the old cell phone batteries needed to be fully drained before recharged.
the same principle should have some hold as to whether you are driving in stop and go traffic or on a highway or interstate.
because on the highways and interstates.. there is no recharging from the brakes, unless those things spin and are always charging regardless of whether the brake pedal is touched.
and even then..
stop and go is exactly that.. different than long trips of constant movement along a highway or interstate.
hopefully we wise up to realize our money would be better spent if we changed the battery for whichever type of driving we plan on doing.
it means the battery will last longer before needing replaced.
and
it means the charge could last much longer because the power was being drained correctly.
trigonometry states that if you have the power of three at your disposal..
only two batteries is going to require each battery to do their job PLUS midrange performance to meet halfway with eachother.
get three different types of batteries.. one for short, one for long, and one in the middle.. then all you need is a controller to use the perfect battery for the perfect situation.
i could picture these controllers being automatic and too little too late.
whether that shaves miles off of the charge or years off the end of the batteries life.. that only again proves it is better to know and do it yourself.
i have dropped my car out of overdrive because i can see the road in front of me, and i know there is no reason to shift into third gear because there is going to be another stop.
i also can see the road in front of me to know there is no reason to shift out of 1st gear because i am going to be making a stop at roughly the same exact time the engine would try to shift into 2nd gear.
you put a shifter in one of these electric cars that does the same thing and we could go further.
perhaps save some money for both of us.
or
at the very least..
make a trip to some local fast food place to grab some food before you go home or to the hotel and put the car on the charger.
that trip to get some food is what it takes to excel and appreciate.
then it would obviously be where and how long to charge the vehicle.
because if you could stop at a gas station and give the charge a boost much the same as filling up the car with gasoline.. it could take some of the embarassment from the need to be responsible and highly worried about other people.
nothing like saying 'okay this trip is going to take 10 minutes'
and then you get out there only to realize there are things going on beyond your control.
you drive slower, and that might kill the battery faster.
10 minutes turns into 30 minutes and you are again gambling with the 'gas'
i should know.. i usually only put $5 in my tank when i go to the gas station.
when the tank says it is low.. it really is LOW, as in hurry the hell up or i will have to push the car.
food for thought..
one reason why some people dont buy the electric cars.
they see that fear without any experience living in it, or they have lived in it and dont want to be put into that situation again.
any sales person can tell you the battery isnt much to be worried about, as if driving around on $5 of gas.
but
they dont tell you anything about if the battery is going to keep doing that for 3 years?
one reason why they put small engines inside the vehicle.
gasoline is quicker and easier to get in an emergency, some say.
but
i am ignorant enough to throw a pole onto one of the many electrical lines and get a recharge.
you see those power lines up and down the roads when there isnt a single gas station in sight anywhere.
but
you see one gas station across the street from another gas station.
that doesnt look very responsible for the transition to electric cars.
and of course they say 'we wont get any business if we are way out in the country'
your life is what you make of it until somebody or some thing gets in the way.
that is what puts much of the stress onto the recharge times.
if something should occur..
you need to get your charge back up and you cant stop your whole day to do it.
might prove to ruin the rest of the day.
late for appointments or late for work.. missed opportunities.
nothing wrong with dreaming about a gasoline 'ricer' playing around with an electric 'ricer' out on the street.
but
when it comes time to 'settle down' or 'stop'
things get torn apart real quick and easy.
the gasoline car fuels up and is out there some more.
the electric car has to sit around and wait for however long it takes.
one could hope it brings social activities up as people come together and hang out while the car recharges.
but
time waits for nobody over here.
