The NSA was able to collect over 500 million phone call records in 2017 compared to 151 million in 2016, despite reforms in the "USA FREEDOM Act" that were supposed to drastically limit NSA's collection powers.

Not surprised. The thing obviously doesn't do what its supposed to though, despite scrutiny of "rights" organizations. So, either there are loopholes buried deep, it doesn't have enough teeth, or the alphabet soups ( yeah, civil law enforcement, sure... on paper) just don't give a flying flip about the rights of citizens.... incidental, my eye.

The PATRIOT was an emergency knee-jerk reaction to 9/11.

We just need to repeal it and start from scratch now that we are not in a blind panic. We can take the time to debate security properly and do things right.
The same needs to happen with the TSA and all the other poorly-executed fear-induced crap from that era.

Wrong. The USA PATRIOT Act was sitting on a shelf, for years, full of the wishes and dreams of people who knew that it'd never get passed, barring some massive event taking place.

...And then it got passed as an emergency knee-jerk reaction to 9/11... So I'm not sure why you want to split hairs about how it came to pass. Every piece of legislation starts off as somebody's wish list.Usually bills get fixed through debate and reasonable compromise, and those that can't die. But sometimes congress pushes something through out of fear/desperation, and those are the things that we need them to go back and fix after the dust has settled.

At the end of the day we still wound up with legislation that causes real problems, which need real action to find a real solution.

Please look up the Stasi of East Germany. The "Deep State" is quickly becoming that; usurping power it was never intended to have.

Yeah, you don't care now... but you will when something you say in innocence triggers one of their red flags and they pay you a visit and/or you can't fly anywhere ever again, even if a family emergency were to arise. There are many things said in innocence that trigger such things, because in their eyes, those things are problems for their business model of running the world.

The issue with privacy is this, it is an inalienable right! A tyrannical government does not want privacy so it can prosecute "Criminals," Which will soon be political criminals just like Stalin's Russia and Hitler's Germany if we continue to let our Government step on the Bill of Rights and have its own power continue to exceed the peoples power. The Government is a tool of the people not the peoples master, at this rate 20 years from now we will all be forced to be of single mind and thought, and those who step a hair out of line will be dealt with swiftly because of the slow dissolving (if not even repealing) of the Bill of Rights. At that point we will be real slaves for our masters, the GOVERNMENT! The Bill of Rights was created to protect OURSELVES from a growing tyrannical government, and those rights are clearly written as inalienable! Which means even if they are repealed they still apply! Please read them, when we loose them we really do loose our freedom and will be no longer a free nation.

PS If you associate your self with an ideology (Liberal, Conservative, etc) you are more than likely too close minded to help the problem. This all happened because people want to believe their "side" (which isn't nearly as black and white as they think) is better. It isn't. If you aren't willing to understand that someone else's viewpoint may make more sense then what you already strongly believe, you are too jaded to help and can't see or participate clearly about this country.
