I have been dealing with a problem on my NT4/SP6a workstation. This machine has a fairly new install (3 months maybe) & has been rock solid stability wise. It is a Abit BF6 BX chipset mobo/Celeron433/384MB machine.

I went to shut it down last night & out of the blue it refused! I couldn't log off or restart either. I have made no hardware/software changes & had never encountered this problem before. I have been running NT4 on this exact machine with all the same adapters for over 2 years. I frequently reinstall to keep things "fresh".

What happens is after being on the computer for a short while, if I go to either shutdown/restart/logoff, nothing happens!!! I can continue working on my pc as if I didn't try to shutdown or restart. But if I try it a second time, I get the hourglass & the screen "darkens" as if it will shutdown, but nothing more. It will just stay on this screen forever until I press the shutdown button.

Now, after restarting, I almost always get a blue screen (kmode exception blah blah...win32k.sys) during bootup. I reboot once again then all is fine, until I have to shutdown again that is. Then I repeat the whole process!! The blue screen error happens about 60% of the time I'd guess.

I have noticed that once I boot the computer, if I immediately try to shutdown/restart/logoff, it works!!! But after a while on the computer, it's a no go.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

I love windows. No specific ideas on this yet, but general maintenance things that have fixed this type of problem for me in the past: delete all .tmp files, check drive for errors, check your services to make sure there's nothing running that you really don't need to be there. Outside of that, sounds like some kind of app is crashing.

Have you checked the MS KB on the BSOD you're getting? I'd start there.
