One of our old servers is still running NT4 build 1381. Tried to install
Arcserve version 11. Arcserve requires IE 5 or above. Tried to install IE6.
Now requires sp6 before I can install anything. Tried to install sp6 and
got the following error "Service Pack Setup cannot update a checked (debug)
system with a free (retail) version of the Service Pack or vice versa". I
decided to leave the above and see if I could install a different backup
software (I tried to install TSM) and got the following error message "The
windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are
running Windows in safe mode or if the Windows Installer is not correctly
installed"
Do I have to rebuild server or can I get around the sp6 installation problems.

Hi Michy,

The error message from SP6 says exactly what it means - it would appear that
your NT4 machine has a checked build (ie: a version designed for debugging and
software development) instead of the 'free' version, which is the normal (ie:
end user) build.

Check what the machine says when you reboot it and you get to the blue screen
where it tells you NT4 Server (build 1381) etc...

The information presented includes information on how many processors are being
supported, how much RAM, and importantly in your case, is it a checked or free
build.

If you are running a checked version, you'll need the matching SP6a for this
situation. Perhaps others would like to comment further here - I've had very
little experience with dealing with a checked build.

Once you sort out your service pack problems, a lot of your installation woes
will go away.

The error you got with attempting to install TSM suggests that it is probably
looking for MSI V2.0 or later - V1.1 was the original 'standard' Microsoft
Installer for NT4.0. Again, MSI can be upgraded to V2.0, but it is worth doing
some research before attempting this. The upgrade to MSI 2.0 can have unforeseen
consequences in some cases.

Calvin.
