I was wondering if someone could help me. I just bought a abit KG7 and an AMD athlon 1600+ xp, and after installing it and flashing the bios I was able to get the harddrive to read. It attempts to boot up to Windows XP (professional), but goes directly to a black screen, same as with safe mode, i need to get some kind of boot up disk or something that can read NTFS drives... I dont want to reformat cause I have tons of data that i dont want to lose, does anyone know a way around this? Are there any utils on the CD that i can run to revert back to Fat32? Any help would be appreciated.. thanks

you can revert a ntfs hd in fat32 with NT by an nt tool.
so it should be also on your cd.

if you know you don't know, the way could be more easy.

no, the conversion utiltity can be accessed from a command prompt. but that is only for going from fat/fat32 -->ntfs. the command is follows:
convert "drive letter" /fs:ntfs /v
there is no way i know of (using nt/w2k for years, looking through help files and searching the net) to go from ntfs back to fat/fat32. if you had data on there you should've backed it up somehow in the first place. 90% of the time a drive from another computer will not work if you plug it into a different one w/out formatting it. one thing to do is.... if you have another hdd around (just a temp), plug it in and install OS using ntfs. then after plug the other one in as slave or second ide, it'll boot from the drive you installed the OS on and you'll be able to access and grab whatever you need off of the drive.

"the conversion utiltity can be accessed from a command prompt."
yes, of course, when you can't access your drive. lol

"there is no way i know of (using nt/w2k for years, looking through help files and searching the net) to go from ntfs back to fat/fat32"
btw, i already did this. lol

you did? lol. hmm, MS must not know what their talking about then as far as their own OS goes, lol:

The conversion is a one-way process. After a partition has been converted to NTFS, it is not possible to convert the partition back to a FAT partition. To restore the partition as a FAT partition, the partition would have to be reformatted as FAT (which would erase all data from the partition) and then data can be restored from backup

that was for win2000, lol. here is one for winXP, lol:
The conversion to NTFS is a one-way process. After you convert a drive or partition to NTFS, you cannot convert it back to FAT or FAT32. To restore the volume to the previous file system, you must reformat it as FAT or FAT32. This action erases all existing data including your programs and personal files. In this case, you must either restore your data from a backup, or reinstall your operating system and programs

lol
the only way you could go from ntfs back to fat/fat32 is a third party app (partition magic, etc), lol. but going strictly off what MS supplies you, you cannot. lol.

oh, lol. here is something else i found on the net, lol:
Q. How can a NTFS partition be converted to a FAT partition?

A. A simple conversion is not possible, and the only course of action is to backup all the data on the drive, reformat the disk to FAT and then restore your data backup.

I've been informed that a NTFS to FAT conversion is now possible with PartitionMagic5.0 by PowerQuest

Partition Magic 7 can convert ntfs back to fat or fat32. Check below.
