NV40: Not 16 pipelines... 8 pipelines.

Hitory repeats itself. Remember how everyone said the GeforceFX had 8 pipelines until they admitted it was actually a 4x2 architecture?

If this is true, I'd say the 12x1 R420 should be in pretty good shape...

Although we keep hearing about NV45 rumors. Is a separate NV45 going to be released? Or did they replace NV40 with NV45 and are the hardware sites just calling the NV45 as NV40 by default? If the NV45 exists separately, might the NV45 which have a true 16 pipeline architecture a little while later? Or at the same time? Or not at all?

There's alot of rumor to wade through here. The plot thickens...

I wouldn't say so. Remember that Ati's 8x1 in the r3xx is much better than Nvidias 4x2 in the GeforceFX. It depends on the app, and other things like shader speed come into play.

Whatever the case, it'll be very interesting to see which apps work better on which cards. I suspect some titles will highly favor a specific architecture.

The old NV40 is gone, it is now NV40-rev.2 (not even released an there's a revision 2!). The idea that it is/was the NV45 is still out there, but we won't know until it hits the review benches. Currently the thinking is that it is a redesign/respin (costly, but doesn't canabalize the future to make the present a little bit better).

The trany count alone means it's not the original NV40.

8x2 versus 16x1 IS a huge deal. While there has been alot of talk about DX9.1 (now 9.0C) bringing forth more power/functionality from that architecture, it still hasn't been proven yet. If the single texturing results from 3Dmk01 are any indication it is pretty powerful none the less.

Like I said before it will be interesting seeing the Xx1 vs the Xx2 design benifits. 16x1 really meant no design differences, simply raw power. And if that's not ther case then I don't think that the NV40 is as powerful on paper anymore. It does make a big difference, wait states will play differently in different titles. 16x1 would always react similar to 12x1 regardlesss of optimization/coding/game particularities, etc.

Should make things interesting. Still FP32 and PS/VS3.0 will also make the choice harder IMO. This IS the round where I decide to get another card to last me 1-2 years (the length of time with the R9600Pro has only been dictated by the delay of PCI-EX cards/mobos.

None the less still can't wait. Need concrete proof of these things, I'm not a man opf faith as many of you may already know.

Notice DUAL DVI and DUAL MOLEX connectors.

And of course it's an AGP card, not PCI-EX.
