nice read.. i just thought the same today as i've read about some new driver issues and all..

i've followed beyond3d lately on the original tests how the nv30 hw really works, and i have to say that card is so old-style in hw.. the floatingpoint features are merely hacked into it, as a tiny addon (as i said yet before, floating point support is not great by nvidia).

ati on their hands made a full line with the r3xx.. they stripped all fixed function out, all non-floating-point out of their hw, and the result is a quite slim and very fast future oriented chip. floatingpoints everywhere, as this is THE future of gpu's.

and the only thing nvidia can do against this is cheating, lying, and all the morally illegal things you can do.

what if one comes with a good alternative to the nforce boards? will they start cheating there?

The article is an excellent read. I know I posted something earlier yesterday regarding the R300 VPU and how technologically advanced it was and it enforced what this article was saying nicely.

Interesting that they pointed out the original optimization article they wrote.
I just wish everyone would read both of these articles. If they did that, they'd be stupid to insist blame fall elsewhere than with Nvidia and they're stooge Futuremark. I hate it when people won't admit that they've been had because they think it will make them look dumb. Nvidia snowed over a lot of people...myself included (I bought the GF2 back when it first came out and have been pretty much loyal til this year...still have the GF3 Ti 200 and love it). I admitted the fact that I was lied/cheated/snowed and now I'm moving on...not necessarily away from Nvidia...I'm just dropping the facade that they 'optimized' things. I wish Nvidia would just level with everyone, not just manufacturers and hardware review sites. If a person is able to admit they are wrong, they are said to have class. With companies it should be the same. I'm still waiting for them to admit it instead of buying an alibi from futuremark and not admitting squat. *taps fingers on desk* still waiting...

Hopefully nVidia will actually listen to the community this time! They've been beaten, so they cheated. Bunch of sore losers IMO. I really hope they change their tactics and get more involved with the people that give them the money they have. It seems they are trying to force their tactics on us instead of listening to what we want and implementing it accordingly. Kinda makes me regret buying an nForce2 board.

people call us fanboys. fanATIcs

but were just smarter than them. smart enough to actually see when were being lied to. theres been a group of hardcore anti-nvidia people here i admit... not so much lately because we've gotten flack for it. ive even tried NOT to post anti-Nvidia stuff just in case ive been bias'd, as humans tend to be

but you can tell with their cards. my TI4200? i was lied to with this as well. read my "WTF ONLY one TMU WHEN USING AF FILTERING??" thread

Quite frankly, I don’t like not having that ability taken from me either. I think when we spend $400 or $500 on a video card, we should be able to turn on true Trilinear Filtering in the game if that is what we want, and NVIDIA has taken this away from us. We spoke to NVIDIA about this months ago, and we thought we had negotiated an answer that would make everyone happy. We have publicly referred to this multiple times. We expected a control in their new drivers that would allow the application to set influences that affect image quality
i have another problem related to this with my TI4200

in 4x.xx series of Detonators AA is fvcked. using the popular AA pattern tester, people have found out that 4XAA has the EXACT SAME sampling pattern as 2XAA.

quincunx isnt an option ,because it degrades visual quality too much

so, in order to get the ATI equivilant of "2XAA" on my Nvidia based card, i have to use "4XS AA" which is a supersampling method, and therefore superslow

rip off # 1 on my TI4200 - only 4x1 architecture when using AF. VERY noticeable slow down in fill-rate intensive scenes EXAMPLE - the 3rd person view behind a tank in BF1942 with all the smokey dust coming from the tracks

rip off # 2 on my TI4200 - AA that just isnt useable

What I want to see is Review sites calling a spade a spade- not dance around the topic by saying it is an "optimization" or that the drive must be "broken". If all the reviews pointed out and checked for cheats it could make a real difference in the industry.

For a mutibillion dollar company sometimes the only morality is found by effecting their bottom line. Do that and the shareholders will take notice.

Yeah...read the review. There's a link inside the review that 'calls a spade a spade.' It points to the optimization that allows Nvidia better framerates in UT2K3 since they do not render the entire scene.

Or just click the word 'original' in my first post and that will take you to the article I'm speaking of.

Well I had both cards and took both back one is no better than the other, and by the time they have something for the cards to use they will have newer cards out on the market so all you doing is beating a dead horse.BTW both used about the same method on the benchmarks to make there own cards seem best of the group,so what is new;the suckers are just trying to get ahead by benching you to death.

the truth is, in the world of computing there are 100 times the amount of stupid people then smart ones. nVidia's smart at that, bet u anything it costs nVidia alot cheaper to develop cards, cause they take the old stuff, make it look new, add some new functions, makes a bunch of new names and sell it into the public. THE PUBLIC WILL BUY THEM!! just as much as people will buy radeon. Also realise alot of the older people (30-60) make their purchases mostly according to brand, and nVidia is much more well known (don't argue, it is u fanATics) brand.
ATi has a much crappier marketing strategy than nVidia cause they think "if we produce better product than them, we'll sell more then them" It doesn't work this way.

That's my 2.6 cent

That's a great read. I'd say these days, there are a HELL OF A LOT more people buying ATi than there used to be. nVidia is still bigger, but people are going to get the message and start switching unless nVidia changes their ways. And Sharkmeat is dumb.

That has to be the only article I have ever liked from Kyle, the red-necked dude.

Nice read, definitely happy to see an editorial on a review site. If THG did that as well, with Omid, it'd rock. Omid's da man at rants/editorials!

I know what's happening...

Nvidia is dissapointing as many people as possible now, so NV40 will look phenomenal! Now all they have to do is win the performance ánd quality battle from R400. Go Nvidia go!

LOL.

nVidia's disappointments are gonna be their end really. Even if NV40 rocks, it could be some Voodoo 3 running at 700MHZ core, and it still would look like a new generation!

NVIDIA needs to fess up to their actions publicly. NVIDIA needs to apologize for their actions publicly. NVIDIA needs to spell out the corrections they are going to make publicly. NVIDIA needs to make the community aware of the optimizations they will make that affect benchmark scores in games and synthetics. NVIDIA needs to treat the community with the respect they deserve. If they do not, the enthusiast community needs to go spend their money with the competition and urge all the people that ask them for buying advice to do the same.

Amen.

The thing is, people think nVidia will survive without the enthusiast community, but I must ask them this:
Why did ATi suddenly rise and got SIGNIFICANT sales rise since the R300's release?

ATi has never enjoyed such significant success and it is thanks to enthusiasts. nVidia still has a great loyal fanbase, but that amount will continue to reduce if they play their consumers that way.
