I have read that with 4k it is the RAM, not the necessarily the GPU.
To get to the recommend 8gb from several sources with NVidia, you need two cards in SLI, with a R9 290X/295x they come in 8gb on one card.

Would the performance be close with the 290x/295x in 4k with one card vs the better performance from two NVidia's at 2x the cost?

295x2 is the best card for 4k at the moment, also it only has a total of 4GB of VRAM since it is 2x 290x in one. 8GB would be nice and it makes you feel safe, but not 100% necessary, I have 2x 295x2 and I play 4k at ultra settings with no problems. Also 295x2 is able to keep its cool under heavy loads such as those settings I said above. My max temperature I ever got up to was 74C playing games like BF4 or Crysis 3 4k with ultra settings on everything, and sometimes with MSAA x4 too. So that's pretty cool for such high settings. Basically Nvidia = Lowe resolutions, AMD= Higher resolutions.

295x2 is a dual GPU card - the memory doesn't stack additively (as in 4+4) it's split between the two cards, so they both get 4gb each. (you just essentially get two 290x precrossfired on a single pcb)

They did release a 290x now that has 8gb itself, but it's not really necessary at this time. The 295x2 I would expect outperforms it handily still. (as it's TWO 290x in one)

I'm not a government employee....I don't believe in getting twice as many at twice the price. Since I am looking at RAM amount only, I feel the 290x 8gb will be fine.

8GB of VRAM is pretty unnecessary, you'd be paying $100 for like 3 more fps.

Yeah, 8gb of vram will come into play later on.... when we're trying to drive multimonitor 4k displays xD

Atm it's pretty unnecessary - one spot where it might be good is Shadows of Mordor if he plays that - can draw up to 6gb of vram I think with the upgraded textures pack on.

In any case make sure you get two and Crossfire the cards OP - one won't satisfy you unless you're aiming at pretty low fps in stuff.
