Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
If you
use this driver portal from Nvidia, you will find your driver. What OS are you working with? Make and model of your PSU and it's age? Where is the installer located on your drive? It helps if you can run the installer in an elevated command, i.e, Right click installer>Run as Administrator if you're working with Windows 7 and above. Likewise have the drivers folder on your desktop, then run the installer from there.
I went to Nvidia's website and found the drivers by using their list for my model of card. It downloaded fine. After the Wizard kept telling me it could not find the software which was saved automatically to wherever the default location saves such files after you open an run the downloaded file, I made a copy of the file, sent it to a flash drive. This way I had a easy location to provide to the Wizard to look for the software (in this case the E:\ drive). When wizard asked for a location to search for the software I put in the flash drive location. Wizard said that location did not exist. No matter what location or folder I specify the Wizard says it does not exist. The OS is Windows XP Professional w/SP3.
The PSU is a:
Cooler Master ATX-12V
650 Watt
RP-650-PCAR
110V - 220V - 230V
10A/6.3A
50/60 Hz
W/O PFC
This was installed in 2010 I think. This computer was always plugged into a APC 725 battery backup device.
UPDATE
Fired it up this morning and checked the device manager. The " VGA compliant device" was no longer listed. Only the PCI device had the yellow ? on it. I went to system information and it gave me a listing under the display tab. This is what is now listed, which was not there yesterday.
Name NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT
PNP Device ID PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0421&SUBSYS_23171682&REV_A1\4&A731289&0&0018
ADAPTER TYPE GeFORCE 8500GT, NVIDIA compatible
Adapter description NVIDA GeForce 8500GT
Adapter RAM 512.00 MB
installed drivers inv4_disp.dll
Driver Version 6.14.13.4052
So, it appears the driver download did take. ( I honestly have no idea how that happened).
Now I need to understand what is the issue on this PCI device. All three PCI Express slots are empty except one. that one has the Nvidia 8500GT card in it. the other two are empty. the two PCI card slots are also empty. so I'm not sure what the computer is reading about a issue with a PCI slot 17. Ive got the ID code of the problem PCI device and will google it to see what if anything is offered.
The google search has revealed the code is based on the Marvell supported RAID package that was part of the motherboard features. The motherboard came with two floppy discs for intalling RAID drivers.
Upon start up when we built this computer the IT guy who helped me told me to just hit the start button and nothing else, well one day I forgot and I hit control M and from that point on it would always go to a blank screen with a flashing dash symbol in upper left corner of the monitor. Id have to hit ctl=alt=delete to get it back to the start up screen and hit the space bar to get it to start windows. sometimes I have to go through that process 4 of 5 times before window will start. So, it looks like it is that Marvell controller thats wanting to start and I have never installed the RAID floppy disc with the drivers . I have no idea if I have any reason to install these drivers, or if it will just cause me more problems than I have now. I have no idea how to get the computer to start normal without the space bar technique to get to windows?? Here is what the google search revealed.
The AB in the code was for Marvell
The 6145 was for the 88SE6145 SATA ll PCI-E Controller
heres the code:
PCI\VEN_11AB&DEV_6145&SUBSYS_6145AB&REV_A1\4&2D8B019B&0&00E4
Any help on this second issue with the Marvell controller wanting to start up on start up will help. first issue was the drivers for the Nvidia has been solved, the second is the Marvell controller thing. IWhat I dont understand is all the slots are empty except the one for the Nvidia card. Why the yellow ? when there is no device plugged into another PCI-E slot?
