NVIDIA and AMD in one pc, is it possible?

So, I have been reading about this on several forums. But they are talking about mining and stuff, I don't even know what mining is. But anyways, my question is: are you able to have an amd and a nvidia gpu installed on the same mobo in the same pc? The reason why I ask this is because I recently bought a r9 280x and sold my old GTX 560. But the thing I did not think of, which is pretty stupid, was that I am using AE and sony vegas for rendering videos. CUDA is amazing with these programs because you render much faster. Now I have to use my i5 3470. It takes a lot longer now to render. So I would like to install a somewhat cheaper nvidia gpu for the CUDA core and render videos with the nvidia gpu. Only for that, for the rest I will use my 280x.
I hope someone could help me out.

You can use you 280x by enabling OpenCL accelleration in Sony Vegas.

Requires an OpenCL-enabled GPU and Catalyst driver 11.7 or later with a Radeon HD 57xx or higher GPU.

Actually you can, just not in games.
