I'm running Windows 10 build 10586.
MOBO - ASRock Z97 Anniversary.

My monitor has native resolution of 1366x768. I bought a GTX 970 1 week ago and would want to try out some higher ones as I'd like to buy a newer monitor with a res. of 2560x1080.
The monitor I currently have is an ASUS VS197DE VGA port but am using it through an DVI to VGA adapter (my PC doesn't support VGA).

When I go to the NVidia control panel to create custom resolution of 2560x1080, selecting the automatic option makes display go completely blank and flickering (the top part of the screen). The others modes... DMT or CVT... work fine but the aspect ratio is stretched.

I tried choosing "scale on Display" and messing around with the Aspect Ratio, Fullscreen and No Scaling options but no luck, they all look the same... stretched (like running 16:9 on a 4:3 monitor). I also tried scaling on GPU and same settings but again, at no avail.

I bought an HDMI to VGA adapter after all... nothing better.
I also noticed that when I looked at the INFO on my monitor, it read "1920x1080" resolution... but my native res. is only 1366x768. How can that happen? Even so, why does the scaling not working at all?

About creating custom resolution... Windows doesn't seem to detect my 21:9 one, only the 1920x1080 (also custom made... but same aspect ratio as monitor). The only way Windows shows up that ultra-wide res. is if I go through NVCP again and choosing from there.

Also have an older PC on same build of Win10, nVidia GT520, 1280x1024 BenQ (VGA).
The aspect ratio and all the scaling stuff works like a charm no matter what res. I want

UPDATE: I recently bought a 21/9 monitor and everything works just fine so I don't bother with those settings anymore. W10 detected it automatically as soon as I plugged it in.

Solution
that's a win-10 issue with NVidia they struggled with there 10 drivers

try some different drivers out ?? it could be a thing with 900 cards as well seeing your older cards do ok with NVidia and the drivers on 10 you do see a few threads here on that ?

I thought NVidia had this fixed like after 35x.xx drivers ?? but my guess it rejecting a non supported resolution over all use the benq and see if it accepts it over the monitor that's not
