Nvidia disables overclocking ???

I just came through this

This is utterly atrocious. I mean that the Maxwell was supposed to be more power efficient / cooler, hence I was thinking they would be better overclockers.
So, here are a few things I want to discuss.
1. Are there even more hidden "flaws" in the Maxwell gen? I mean, they didn't disable OC'ing in older gens. I had been OC'ing from the 5XXm fermi gen without any "problem" and suddenly the new gen cannot be OC'ed?
2. Is Nvidia hiding something? I mean have they limited the cards to too low a power consumption or anything, so that the OC'ed cards would run into trouble?
3. As the discussion speculates, is it temporary or will limit all cards in future?
Hope some of you can throw some light in the subject.
It has been a disturbing news this morning and the Maxwell just keeps getting more depressing
🙁

Laptops are designed with specific specs and thermal designs in mind. It's smart of Nvidia to lock down overclocking mobile cards. I'm sick of people bricking their laptops and whining about "Why'd they let me overclock my laptop if it's not safe, waaaaaah!?"

The Maxwell laptop GPUs are miles and miles ahead of Fermi and Kepler laptop cards at stock, and already incorporate a boost clock up to safe limits. There's no reason, when laptop manufacturers spend so long balancing cooling, to allow users to throw the whole thing out of balance again.

They're not like desktops, where someone can build a tower with excessive cooling. And they're not like the older weaker laptops, where thermals were loose and random. The new gen of laptop cards are much smarter and more dynamic with their power use - overclocking is no longer worth pushing the hardware past its safe limits.

I completely agree with your argument. Any OC'ing is risky if one is not sure about it and in case of laptops, that risk increases many folds.
However, why is it just for the Maxwell gen? That was my point of worry. With the new drivers, I can still OC the Fermi and Kepler GPU's which are older and are supposedly dumber and less judicious with their power management. Dynamic Boost is available in the Kepler gen also. If you read Nvidia's post carefully, they say and I quote "There was a bug introduced into our drivers which enabled some systems to overclock. This was fixed in a recent update.". Isn't that hilarious? A "bug" enabled OC'ing ??? If that is not eyewash, I don't know what is.
