I'm having a bit of an issue updating my drivers (and installing now), here's the situation:

I'm running 2 geforce 970 in SLI on Win10 x64. Currently, I'm driverless as I can't get anything to install.

I was running on 373.06, decided to update to 397.64 and couldn't do it. Here's what I've done so far. The file gets to the same point every time, where it jumps from system check to failure. I can't even attempt a clean install.

1. Rebooting
2. Followed by redownloading file and reinstalling.
3. Downloading Display Driver Uninstaller, unpack. Reboot into safe mode and select clean and restart.
4. Reinstalling 397.64 in normal mode to no avail.
5. Attempt to reinstall old 373.06 drivers that worked. These drivers no longer worked.
6. Attempt to reinstall drivers by extracting to D: drive.
7. Repeat step 3, but reinstall 397.64 after rebooting again into safe mode.
Note: I verified that the files in the following folders were deleted before attempting to reinstall:
C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nvdsp.inf–xxxsomethingxxx
C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nv_lh–xxxsomethingxxx
C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nvoclock–xxxsomethingxxx
C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\
C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\
8. Perform Clean install under super user
Download and extract PStools.
Move the PsExec.exe file into your C:\Windows\System32\ folder.
Press Windows key + R and type the following command into the message box. Be sure to replace the path accordingly to your own reference :

psexec -i -s “C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\xxx.xx\windows_version\English\Display.Driver\setup.exe”

NEVER REACHED THIS FAR ON STEP 8: After the License Agreement screen, choose Custom instead of Express installation.
Now you can check Perform a Clean Installation and uncheck NVIDIA Update.
9. Open device manager, find the GPU and update driver the manual way. I am able to locate the drivers that were extracted under C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\397.64\Win10_64. This errors out.

I'm lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On the NVIDIA driver install failed summary it states that all components (except 1) were not installed. NVIDIA WMI shows up as not selected. (Again, I don't even reach the portion of the screen where I can select what to install or how to install.)

Thanks!

UPDATE 5/17:

Still not working, here is what I have tried.

Step 10. I deleted the C:/Temp folder, no help.

Step 11. I made the changes to no avail. to step 8 above as C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\xxx.xx\windows_version\English\setup.exe.

Step 12. I have updated my drivers per your recommendation to the latest, I'm using the Asus Z170-AR.

Step 13. I have pulled the GPU's and ran them in single mode, no help. I even ran DDU in safe mode in between each install attempt. The fans on the GPU's are spinning and I don't see any post codes.

Step 14. I ran windows file integrity, it found some thing... but that did not fix my issues.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4026529/window...

Unfortunately 387.92 also didn't work.

If you have ANY ideas, I'd be interested.

As a clarification:
It won't give me an error code! All I get is "NVIDIA Installer Failed." Nothing else.
It states the various components as not installed, such as Physx system software, nView, etc... This happens straight from the "Checking system compatibility screen. I have 0 chance to change anything else.

UPDATE 5/18:

Downloaded the windows cab file and have something that maybe useful? Got the cab file from here https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=NVIDIA+%E2%80%93+Display+%E2%80%93+10%2F27%2F2017

**I have this log... but it's very long. Let me know if you want me to post.**

See my last post on 5/20 to see fix, essentially it was software and I reset my windows.

Sli is very iffy sometimes. Your best bet is to try to run each card separately and see if you are able to download drivers. If that is unsuccessful try to reset windows and bios (don't get rid of files) if that doesn't work you are going to want to do a powerwash of your computer. Hope this helps!

Ran each card separately no to avail. By resetting windows... what will I lose?

Tried with no luck. GPU's seem to be running fine. Tried different power supplies as well with no change.

Might be hitting the limits of what I can do on that one. The thing is, these GPU both operated fine for over a year without issue until I tried to update the drivers. Even then, they worked... just can't update the software. I'd still have drivers if it weren't for DDU. I can't understand with the other troubleshooting and the fact that they are showing up in device manager how this may be a hardware issue.

Try removing one of the GPUs and re-installing the older working Nvidia driver version from scratch letting Nvidia installer do the cleansing for you (with option to remove previous settings, no DDU), then if successful add the second card.

I tried the older driver that I initially had while running the 1 gpu, unfortunately it will not install.

When installing, I have the ability to select 0 install options or do anything. It goes from extracting -> checking system compatibility -> Install failed. That's it. It was doing this even before I ran the initial DDU.

i had this happen to a friend of mine that i build a pc for him. the gpu was not fully seated from shipping it would turn on but the drivers would not find the gpu. I can see one gpu going south but if both are not found bu the driver it can be bad windows files or there a control line on the pci bridge chip that failed. the cards are fine but there a missing data line on the mb.

I didn't even know that was a possibility. Anything in particular that you'd recommend to fix?

Sorry for your trouble, I know the feeling.
It again might sound trivial:
- Try removing both cards, booting with your integrated card, cleansing all display drivers with NVIDIA uninstall + DDU in safe mode, reboot, re-installing intel graphic drivers and panel
- (and if needed repeat same steps but this time with update or re-instal other intel drivers like chipset and management Engine prior to the intel graphic one),
- then attach one card/ load display from it and let windows install it's own Nvidia drivers, then reboot and try install your older working Nvidia drivers.
I know you might have already done it but doesn't hurt to mention it.

I just tried my 2nd pci slot as the only one, it's well seated and in there... still the same issue. This would get around if the primary pci slot were having troubles... wouldn't it?

I'm afraid that I don't understand what you're telling me. Could you explain? Thanks!

I appreciate the outreach from the community. I tried this and it didn't work.

Now... while in safe mode windows update did show up with the update for the NVIDIA card... however it wouldn't install since the card was not present (error 0x800f020b) and now I can't get that update to try again. It shows up as a failed windows update... but won't do anything. Let me know if you have any other ideas.

I feel like I'm being punished... but I'm not sure for what yet.

I've updated the post, it doesn't provide any answers for me... but maybe someone else? The DISM log is too long to post in full. Let me know if I can post another way. I'm not sure why it isn't finding the item... It is 100% linked to the right place. This even happens when I tell it to install by clicking the install under the right menu.

I was hoping that I could avoid this as I didn't want to reinstall everything. I attempted the restore point from a week prior... but all it did was also ruin my audio drivers. I still have no idea was to why... I couldn't reinstall the audio drivers regardless of what I did. Since both my audio and visual drivers were having issues I just called it and reset my windows (while keeping personal files). All of my problems are now fixed. Still no idea as to what happened and what was going wrong other than it was obviously software.
