This keeps happing to me and is really getting on my nerves.

I would be playing a game or searching the web and my screen starts flashing then black screens and disconnects and comes back saying "Display driver NVIDIA windows kernel mode driver stopped responding and successfully recovered. If anyone knows a fix for this it would be greatly appreciated.

Specs:
driver version: 337.88
desktop
Graphics: 2x NVIDIA Geforce 9600 GT in SLi Crossfire
monitor: generic PnP monitor
VGA cable with DVI to VGA converter in computer

If you need to know anything else just reply and I can tell you but not sure if anything else would be causing this

Solution

I have solved the same problemi with my xfx GTX 295 under windows 8.1. I have lost a much of...
First of all, Nvidia GPUs use 'SLI' not 'Crossfire' which is a proprietary AMD (formerly ATI) technology.

A GPU will often 'cut-out' and restart (resulting in Windows reporting a Driver error when in actuality it's the hardware itself) when the Graphics Card overheats. Download GPU-Z and use this program to monitor your GPU's temperatures.

Anything above 80C is entering dangerous territory for a GPU. Be aware that the GPU will idle at a low-ish temperature, but will heat up considerably when playing a game or running a graphics rendering program, so load up GPU-Z and alt tab directly to it to see the temperature quickly. Even while alt-tabbed to the desktop the GPU's temperature will rapidly fall by 10-20 degrees C.

If your GPU is overheating, first ensure that it is not covered with dust, nor is there dust in your PC's case or on the case's fans. If dust is present use a compressed air canister to remove it.

Let us know if that works, and what your GPU temperatures are.

Well I was told my 2 graphics cards were in crossfire. It just happened again but only seems to happen while playing minecraft. I have core temp to check the temperatures of my cores and they didnt get that high. The computer is new so I wouldnt think that it has dust in it.

Are the fans spinning at full speed on the cards? Check the 'Fan Speed %' metric on GPU-Z. At idle obviously they won't spin that fast, it's also worth checking inside the case to see if there are any wires interfering with the GPU fans and ensure both Graphics Cards are firmly sat in their PCIe x16 slots as loose connections could lead to the fans not receiving enough power to spin at full speed.

The fans must always be spinning, even when the Graphics Card is not in use.

Did you build this system yourself? Are you comfortable opening the case? I'd check to make sure nothing is restricting the fan blades from spinning. It's very easy for a loose wire to block the GPU's fans. It's also possible the card isn't seated correctly in the PCIe x16 slot resulting in the fan motor power connector not receiving any power. It's further possible one or both power connectors on the card are loose causing the same problem. Check the cards and ensure everything is attached properly.

First of all you need to TOTALLY remove all the old drivers. Use this link.

Note:
Select the respective company(i.e Nvidia or ATI) drivers to be uninstalled.
Use clean and restart option.
And then install the new drivers after rebooting.

I had this problem and solve it by removing my card GForce GT 630 and remove all dust from fan. Put it back and bingo!! no more error messages. Working great! Also I installed the latest driver.

I have solved the same problemi with my xfx GTX 295 under windows 8.1. I have lost a much of time to understand the cause but at the end i have understood. I think many people have che same problem and can solve in my mode. If you execute the windows tool dxdiag you can see that your video memory is higher than the memory installed on your video card. This is because windows add to video card memory some amount of system memory. In my case i have 894MB * 2 = about 1,7 GB of video memory but dxdiag reports i having more than 3GB available for video memory. Now the clock of the video memory of the my GTX295 is about 1008 * 2 = 2016 MHZ but the clock of my system memory is 1600 MHZ. When i play massive 3d game, for example Dark Souls, until the game graphics load into the video memory i can play without problems, but when in some more complex parts of the game the graphics is loaded also into the system memory then the different clock between the two types of memory cause a memory error and the video driver stop to work and i have a black screen.. To solve this problemi i nave installed MSI Afterburner and slowing down the clock of my video card from 1008MHZ to 800MHZ. in this mode the video memory clock become 800*2= 1600MHZ in the same mode of my system memory and the game stop to crash.
