Nvidia driver query.

Hello All, I am hoping some folks on here can shed any light on the following problem.
My older system [ Asus P5N E Sli , Intel Q6600, Nvidia GTX 8800 ] got it all running sweetly on Windows 10 64 bit then, about 3 weeks ago I started suffering the following problem,, After a while [ time varies ] the display would freeze [ although still hear audio when watching you tube ] then about 10 secs after the freeze the audio would stop then the monitor would go blank ! I replaced the memory [8 Gb ] tried 2 other video cards and still the same happens. Have tried all available drivers for the GTX 8800 but no joy. Have disabled the driver under device manager and the machine is now stable but the screen is not at its correct resolution. I presume it is now using a basic Microsoft driver. Any ideas ?

Power supply or motherboard probably. I'd think the old graphics card first but since it does it with others it's either the PSU or board. You have another power supply you can test with?

Hi anort3 thanks for the reply, No I don't have another psu to test. The Corsair 750 watt is only about 2 months old so I never thought of it POSSIBLY being the problem. although, even the most reputable brands can and do have failures.

Before you start replacing parts check the temps. Idle and at load. HWMonitor will retain the high and low temp so it's a good program to use.

It also has a voltage monitor but I don't know if it will be very accurate on old hardware.

Any error code? It just freezes it doesn't blue screen? Windows 10 is fine with a Core2. You have all the correct drivers? Chipset?

Check your hard drive. You can use a program like Speedfan to read the SMART attributes and even perform a self test on the drive.

Speedfan is also a temperature monitoring program but it's not as user friendly as HWMonitor. Click the SMART tab and select your drive from the pulldown menu if necessary. See if it shows any errors and even if it doesn't the drive test isn't a bad idea.

Hello anort3, thanks for all your help with this problem. I use Core Temp AND HW Monitor and the highest the GTX has seen was 51c [ Usually sits around 45c ] The q6600 never rises above 42c on the "hottest " core all others are around 37c [these are when transcoding video ] normal web browsing ect are quite a bit lower. Only once has it Blue screened and, iirc the error code was video tdr failure [ or such like ] all other instances has resulted in the monitor going blank. [ and the monitor message "no signal " ] Hope this info is of use to you or any others.

Update, After doing some research I set the ASPM Pci e to "off " Can now use the proper Nvidia driver and not the generic Microsoft one. All now running rock solid and sweetly again. Never found out why the problem arose in the first place.
