There was some hefty criticism Nvidia had to face from the Linux community about its tight grip on its Tegra graphics core.

Took them long enough, had they done it sooner devs would have been able to make more refined code and better support.

nVidia I'm sure was getting pressure from the 1st part developers that wanted to get a head start on the garage developer. Companies like EA and Activision have been blown away by the success of the Indie developer in the new world of App gaming (itunes / android play / xbox market etc...) and instead of embracing it they choose the path of darkness and have actively worked to hinder the small developer.

Valve / Steam on the other hand has seen how they can give the developers the tools to succeed and become more successful in the process. Go greenlight / indie packs!!
