Nvidia fullscreen no signal bug Oct 2017

For about a month now I've had a very irritating bug with a GTX 1080. If I run any game in full screen theres a chance the monitor will go completely black and just say 'no signal' Changing the games to windowed fullscreen or just windowed stops this from happening. I also tried rolling back the drivers to 385.69 and everything worked again in regular fulscreen.

Today I run a game with the 385.69 drivers and the same issue comes up. Monitor cuts out, if you tab out and in again it will display for about 5 seconds and then go black.

What could be causing this? I read somewhere that it could be a refresh rate issue, but I changed the screen from 144 to 60 and it still showed up.

The main monitor I have runs at 2560x1440p @144, secondary 1920x1080 @ 60.

It's not so much an issue with the refresh rate but having dual monitors with different resolutions and refresh rates. Test the system with a single monitor and see what happens.
