Nvidia G-Sync Technology

Hello,

I have been hearing a lot about Nvidia's G-Sync technology, and G-Sync compatible monitors.
Without further ado, here are a few things I've been wondering...

What is the actual purpose of G-sync?
Is G-Sync actually worth it?
Where do you buy a G-Sync compatible monitor, and is it expensive?
Are there any extra steps in setting up G-Sync, or is it plug and play?

Lots of questions, I know, but everything I've found online has been vague so far.
So I thought I'd, once again, refer to the awesome community on Tom's.

Can't believe i didn't find it on NCIX though....

Pretty much everything is sold out!
So this is only supported on one monitor so far!?
Surprised the monitor isn't sold out everywhere...
But the DIY kit is!

Yea it sucks i bought 3 of those monitors pre gsync i'd love to have the ugprade kits but i don't really feel like voiding my warranty. Provided I could find the upgrade kits anywhere in stock .
