I thought it was clear they were specifically talking about VR Workloads when saying its twice the performance of the Titan X, with the new Lens Matched Shading and Single Pass Stereo, it wasn't implied that it overall had twice the performance - that was compared to the 980.

I'd say it is a very decent leap. I don't know if it's worth 600, but at least it's a big one. I will wait (as I originally intended) for the 1070, since that will be the card "paying the bills".

Also, that extra 100 for the "specially handcrafted cooler"... Can I just laugh now? Or do I have to wait until the first partners destroy it for less money?

i'm still reading some others and checking out some of the videos others have posted. will be a while before i get a chance to update the op but keep those links coming in. i'm looking for tendencies between the sites to see how it looks overall. crunched the numbers from tom's review and here is what they tested. Keep in mind everything is reference cards at stock speeds. I'm sure we can dig up some comparable numbers from some of the custom 980 ti cards out there if you wish to see how they stack up. that and i am sure someone out there will run some fresh tests to compare them to.

At 1440p, the 1080 averaged 25.7% higher than the Titan X and 27.9% higher than the 980 ti. It was 42.6% higher than the Fury X overall.

At 4K, the 1080 averaged 31.3% better than the Titan X and 34.6% better than the 980 ti. The Fury X was beaten by an average of 43.3%.

Not bad at all considering what the card will cost compared to the others. Tom's did note a lot of power and thermal throttling when trying to OC the card. so it will interesting to see if the custom boards add a 6 pin power connector to it to allow for true overclocking with their nice high end coolers. Seems the FE runs right up to that 180w tdp and limits it from going further.

a few reviews i have seen show the 980 ti high end custom models getting pretty close to the 1080 stock numbers. maybe only 10-15% higher for the 1080 which seems about right considering how the stock reference 980 ti fared against it.

I doubt it actually needs more power, just needs the power limit raising. The 8 pin and pci-slot can deliver more than enough.

With the way the new Turbo Boost 3.0 works, the custom aftermarket cards are going to blow the Founder's Edition out of the water. For the first time, lower temperatures lead directly to faster clock speeds. I know a lot of people thought that 65c versus 75c made a difference with their Maxwell cards, but that wasn't the case. With Pascal, the lower the temps the higher the clocks.

Bring on the hybrids!

i agree, but it is clear those higher speeds should need a bit more power than an 8 pin can provide. i am expecting a 6 pin to be added for the real high end cards to really give it limitless power.

if tom's broke 200w with a reference card at 2.1 ghz. another 4-500 mhz and custom cooling will clearly need more than 225w.

Huh... the 4k performance is TERRIBLE, to be honest. Not unplayable but nowhere near the bare minimum of 60fps. And here I hoped we finally have a capable single GPU to game on 4k. The Hype Train derailed *sigh*

For anyone paying attention 60FPS at 4K wasn't expected with this card. Wait for the 980 Ti/Titan replacement later this year or early next year. 60FPS at 4K = high end. Neither Nvidia nor AMD are going to give you the holy grail with a non flagship. Not yet.

if they gave us the best card first, then there would be no reason to trade it in early next year for the next/latest/greatest/fastest. we'd just buy the best one now and enjoy.

but to give us the 1080 now will give folks a true reason to upgrade now (it clearly is a nice improvement) and next year when we see the new titan/1080 ti it'll be another good reason to upgrade. they know what they are doing 😉

Nonono, all he had to say was two letters "VR" right after he said "twice the performance of a Titan X". He didn't because it helps them sell cards. Please educate yourself, did you guys even watch the keynote?

how's this for a master list of reviews!! got it from videocardz.com. they link them all and i'm working my way down the list looking for overall patterns which seem to be there. Performance in common games seem to be withing +/- 4-5 % across the sites. a few outliers so far but that is to be expected, especially for the games without built in benchmarks. where they decide to play for their fraps run makes a difference for sure.

i don't think i can control that? i just type and let it autowrap at the end. i have noticed that my view changes back and forth depending if i am full screen or splitting my screen with other stuff. when i set it up to look right split screen, it changes and goes off when i am full screen. for instance, the ===== separating the areas was all the way across when i did it. full screen it only goes part way across on the second line and mobile seems to go 3 or more times across.

formatting is very limited it seems and i can't even use the full BBCode to make tables and such like i want to.

i've read that these are supposed to go live at geforce.com tomorrow, but they have been confirmed by nvidia as real.

looking forward to this card as it is probably the performance class i'll go for later this year with a new build.

I'm going to wait for the big card. My 980 Ti is doing quite well at 1440p. I'll get a 1080 Ti ( or whatever they call it ) next year and be set for a while even if I get a VR device.

i'm thinking i'll move to a nice big 4k monitor but i don't play a lot of the high end games so not worried about playing at 4k. will be happy with 1440p as an upgrade over 1080p i use now. i mainly want the screen real estate for multiple windows and such i like to keep open. figure the 1070 will be fine for 1440p with the games i play. not really interested in vr but the 1080 should be a beast with the 1080 ti being close to silly at vr performance
