Ok.
I am looking to buy a new graphics card to be able to play games like Battlefield 3 and Crysis 2.
I am torn between either the GTX 570 or GTX 580.
I know that the 580 is a better price, but how much better is it?
is the difference in quality of card worth the extra $130 or is it better to settle for less of a good card but with less of a price?
By the way, after this upgrade I don't want to have to worry about upgrading for a long time to be able to keep up with the latest games.
Also, I have a power supply of 550W. would I need to upgrade my power supply no matter what I choose or can I keep it if I opt for the 570?

If your PSU is from a reputable brand such as Antec, seasonic, etc. Then you will be fine with a gtx580. If it's a sort of el cheapo 550W then probably not.

The fact is that with a gtx580 the power usage will never go above 500W and I challenge anybody to provide opposing evidence. If it's a good 550W PSU then it's fine. A good way to determine this is to find out whether it is 80PLUS certified. 80PLUS means the PSU will have above 80% efficiency within its rated wattage.

If you are planning to play BF3 on full hd resolution, maxed out settings, then you surely need a GTX580. But PSU of 550watt would be a little less for that.
By the way, what resolution are you planning to play those games?
I guess you can keep the PSU for GTX570, but not for GT580 though..!

And yes I would like to play on maxed out settings.

From the looks of that handy website there isn't that great a difference between the two. So, all in all, would it be best to save money and get the lesser- but not by much- card, or to just spend the money and get a great card?
BTW-
Are you saying i could play BF3 on full on either card? And if i were to get the GTX 570 would i still need to upgrade my PSU?

At that resolution, you can play every game on maxed out settings with GTX 570.
There's no point in going for GTX 580, because you wont really need it.
Currently I have GTX 460, and I'm playing every game on maxed out settings on 1920 X 1080. And if you go for GTX 580, you'll have to change your PSU too.
So go for GTX 570 instead. It'll be a good deal, and do the trick for sure..!!

Not to tell these people they are idiots but there is no way a 550w PSU is going to be sufficient for either card. Bot cards pull in the high 400's under load, though those numbers could be a bit higher as there has been debate over the 500 series reporting inaccurately in furmark for power consumption. Now I have to assume you have at least a 65w processor, maybe even a 125w. Even assuming 65w though you are still well over the 90% mark for the for only GPU and CPU with the 570 which is never a good way to run your power. Few hard drives and a large multi-fan setup and you got your computer likely cutting during gaming and definite over-taxing of your PSU. And we've not even mentioned RAM and board power consumption, which, while not much, does add up. For either card I would not recommend less than a 750w PSU, which you can get now or wait until you burn out that 550w and purchase then.

I run a GTX 580 with and Intel Core i7 2600k.
I currently use a 1Kw PSU.
but on my battery backup the power draw never seems to break 450-500w playing a game like Crysis 2 on ultra settings.

GTX 560 / HD 6870 should do high settings (BF3) 1600x900 right? So maybe go for one of these and SLI/Crossfire in future - you would still need to address the PSU when getting 2nd card for SLI/Crossfire

the HD 6870 needs 450/500 watts minimum I think - whilst the GTX 460/560 require a bit more - maybe someone can confirm these?

Hey this is from Nvidia's website "Minimum of a 600 Watt power supply. (Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 42 Amps.)"
its not just the watts its the "amps" these things draw!
Your lucky if you get 20 amps from a 550 PS I would recommend doing some research
I wouldnt run anything less than a 750 watt PS with 50 amps FYI

I just wanted to know how true that is and get info from personal experiences of you guys. :)
