Hello guys,

I´m refurbishing my old Asus F3J and in the process I decided to replace the CPU´s and GPU´s thermal paste when I noticed that the GPU´s heatsink as some kind of aluminum foil between the GPU and the thermal paste as you can see on the pic´s on the link below. That´s the first time that I´m seeing this kind if dissipation method. I am using “Artic Silver 5” on the CPU can I just replace it with it also without the aluminum foil?
Any help will be appreciated.

Solution
That's a version of a thermal pad. It would be better to replace it with another thermal pad rather than try to use paste. The paste is made for very small gaps between surfaces.

Appreciate your reply BadActor,
Ok I see, I should use something like 0.5 mm thermal pad. What about the aluminum foil? The paste/pad on the CPU´s heatsink looks the same only it doesn’t have the foil…makes me think that the foil on the GPU´s sink is there for a purpose.
