I wonder how much you'd have to pay for cooling ontop of the cost of the 2 cards/a mobo with dual pci-e/bridging piece/probably a new psu. them 2 cards are sure to cause an amazing amount of heat. You'd probably end up having to go with water cooling unless you'd want your pc to vibrate and sound like a jet engine when you turn it on. :wink:

If i was going to spend 6 grand on a motherboard, cooling system, and 1000W power supply, i sure as hell wouldnt try to save a few dollars and put 2 6 month old cards in there that werent considered the best avaliable when they were released.

Theyd be good, but why buy a Ferrari and put 87 gas in it?

ditto, 6 months the next revision of these cards is just more memory, no more speed improvements for a while. r500 for ATi maybe but other then that no serious change in the nV line
 
Thats not the point.

Of course you wouldnt necessarily UPGRADE from the GT to a later card. But why buy the older, slower, and cheaper GT when the array system becomes avaliable?

Spending thousands only to be cheap when you buy the cards themselves? Ehh...

The whole 2 card things sounds good but I wonder how they'll get around the possible problems mentioned in Tom's article. I wonder if a possible future graphics solution using two (or more) cards would be to separate out graphics functions onto two cards. For example a card could specialise in normal rendering without AA and would pass that onto a separate card which specialises on just that one thing (and may have low power requirements) so you'd always have the best possible antialising always with no real penalty. Another option (which might solve some problems) would be to have each card rendering every second frame (so they'd have to be a one frame latency?) so that 30 fps normally would smooth at to 60 fps (with the drawback of the output lagging by one frame but hey, who would notice 1/60 second?
 
Buy a Gt now, when you upgrade your CPU/MOBO in 6 months pop another one of these "cheap and outdated" card instead of buying a new R500/whatever. So you end up witht he same perf for cheaper.
I agree far from everybody is in that position but hey...it will benefit some...

i plan on getting a very top notch computer.

Amd 64 I dont know wich one yet (One of the socket 939 cpu).
Mobo, hmmmm a Nforce 3 mobo with 2 pci express slot...IMO its coming soon.

2x Geforce 6800GT
Maybe a raid 0 2x 100gig W/D or a single 200gig if i run out of $$$

I actually read the article. Power and heat be damned, I want someone to divide the x16 bus into two x8 data paths going to two VPU's on the same card. After all, PCI-Ex x8 is still WAY more than any cards will need for the forseeable future.

Actually while we're at it, who needs SLI, just give me the 2 PXI-EX 16X slots and let me put an X800/GF6800 for the main monitor and a mid-range card driving both Surround monitors (who needs Full precision high res AA/AF for surround?). Now THAT's how surround gaming should be done. Even if VIA's AGP + PCI-EX 16X solution does allow both to work simultaneously, then we're in Bizniz!

Anywho, we don't need no stinkin x16 slots, won't need them for YEARS. x4 would be "fast enough", x8 would be fast enough for a few years.

And yes, I wouldn't mind having panoramic gaming via multiple cards!

Absolutely agree with you.

Only an option if you have thousands of $ to burn. Sounds incredibly expensive to me, far from optimal price/performance ratio. I doubt a lot of mobos will provide two x16 slots, and will be quite expensive. 550W Power supply is not exactly what I have. And $1000 for GPUs ... 😱 No man, not for me.

SLI/similar solution could be better for midrange cards, but still uncertain.

My idea: build and additional card with a second GPU/memory that does NOT need x16 slot. Data can come from "master" GPU through a conector. Some kind of add on card. Define a standard protocol for nvidia cards so you can always add future add on cards.


Still looking for a <b>good online retailer</b> in Spain :frown:
