Nvidia graphics card not showing up in device manager and cant install driver!

Hi all. I have been trawling the forums but cant seem to find an answer to this. So the situation is:

1) Bought a new computer with spec: INTEL Core i5 4690K 3.5GHz 1TB 8GB GTX970 4GB
2) Noticed games were slow, realized the nvidia card isn't showing in device manager
3) Tried to update drivers and the nvidia installer just says the driver cant detect hardware to install
4) I tried updating the motherboard drivers etc but no dice
5) I followed a guide to show hidden devices in device manager, and THERE IT WAS! I could see the nvidia card
6) I right clicked and uninstalled the drivers
7) went to re-install, and the computer still cant detect the card
8) checked the card, and the fan is spinning
9) tried pulling out the two PCI cables and putting them back, but nothing happened

So I am stuck with just my intel on board graphics and I have no idea how to solve the issue 🙁

Which mobo, OS and PSU do you have? it's possible that you've downloaded the wrong version of drivers, that your mobo needs it's BIOS updated to properly recognize the video card or that one of your PCI-E connectors is faulty, which could lead to only get the video card fan spinning but not the card itself operating.

We have: Intel B85 Chipset Socket 1150 Motherboard, ATX Midi Tower Case Black * 800W Gaming PSU with 14mm Super-Silent Fan, Windows 8.1 and wouldnt know about the bios :s

I have plugged my monitor in to the motherboard. When I put an adaptor on it so I can plug it in to the graphics card it just gets no output. Could that tell us something?

It's possible that your PSU isn't good enough for your video card, your PSU might have 850w but it also needs to provide enough Amperage in the 12V+ rail, the 970 needs 28A, also if it's from a non reliable brand it can be giving much less than the 850 that it claims.

Before jumping into that however, it's likely that a BIOS update is in need, refer to your mobo's manual on how to do it, as for the latest BIOS update you can download it from your mobo's website.

If you bought your computer from a main pc maker such as lenovo or dell you can find the updates to your bios on their sites. You just have to put in what pc model you bought and the site will make sure you download the right driver. The site might have the right driver for your card too that is certified to work with your pc.

I just upgraded my Alienware laptop (GeForce NVidia GTX 770M adapter) to Windows 10, and had to revert back to the previous BIOS as my display adapter disappeared completely from Control Panel, Device Manager, and anywhere else you might look

Windows 10 did an automatic update to my PC and caused this problem to occur. Once I reverted back to the previous BIOS version, and downloaded/installed the latest driver from NVidia, the PC then recognized the adapter again. Beware of the automatic updates from Windows 10. This helped me, and hopefully will help someone else.

Hi Bruce Wade, i'm also having the same problem you had I don't understand what you mean by reverting to the previous BIOS how do you do this?
I just upgraded to windows 10 as well and can't find my graphics card anywhere.

I have an Alienware laptop which is supported by Dell. So I went to their site and located all drivers associated with my specific computer. The latest BIOS on my computer was called A14 (just an executable file .exe); however, I was able to find previous BIOS files which I could revert to. In this case A13.exe. I downloaded it, ran it, PC now running under the A13 BIOS, and the GeForce was detected once again.

Something occurred when the A14 BIOS was implemented by the Windows 10 automatic upgrade which caused the graphics adapter to become lost. I am not sure what computer you have, but I would go to their website and look for BIOS files. If you need anymore help, let me know what computer you have and I can search for you. Thank you for your quick response, I understand how to do it now. However, I am having more than just this problem so I don't want to pollute this thread. I also didn't manage to download the latest recommended BIOS from dell for my laptop but I will do it if I can be sure my laptop will restart safely.
