Hi Guys,

I just recently got my new gaming PC and some of my friends told me its critical to monitor a couple temperatures while gaming. I downloaded MSI afterburner and i'm measuring my CPU temp and usage,GPU temp and usage,RAM and FPS right now.

After downloading that software I decided to try out a couple games. I noticed that at idle my GPU (Nvidia GTX 1080 TI) sits at around 35°C but when I turn on a game it quickly climbs to 84°C and stays at that temperature. I've tried Rise of the Tomb Raider and Doom so far. In both games it reaches the 84°C within a minute and will stay at that temperature. (The GPU usage also hovers around 97%-99%) I tried lowering the settings from Ultra to Low and it still maintains that 84°C at the lower setting. I also did that Heaven benchmark and it maintained the 84°C throughout the whole thing too.

Does this sound normal to you guys? Or should I be worried about these readings? I'm new to the PC scene but it seems odd that it reaches that temp so fast and then stays there. I've read online of people having their GPU's around 65°C-75°C while playing games. I just want to make sure something isn't wrong with my GPU or computer and if its safe to continue playing.

One side note is that when I hit the windows key to go back to the desktop from the game for a few seconds the GPU temp drops right away to 55-60 ish and then when I full screen the game again it goes right back up.

Thanks

It is working as Nvidia designed it and is nothing to worry about. The blower style coolers just aren't as effective as the 3rd party open air designed coolers. They are still a good option in smaller cases or cases with restricted airflow since they exhaust the heat the remove outside of the case for the most part.
It sounds like you have FE card with the blower style cooler. Those temperatures are completely normal. The temperature target on the card is 84c so that the fans speed is lower and makes less noise. You could create a custom fan profile and bring the load temperature down a bit if you don't mind the extra noise but nothing is wrong with running the card as is.

Krells, thanks for the quick response. So the fact that once it hits 84c and maintains that temperature for as long as I play is fine and nothing to worry about?
