Nvidia GTX 660 2GB GDDR5 or ATI HD 7850 2GB DDR5? Other PC components

Hi all,

I am planning to setup a PC under my budget, I'll be using it mainly for gaming, movies and will be using it with my 50inch FullHD LCD TV attached to my 5.1 home theater.

I can afford either of mentioned graphics card, and chose following components which just exceeds my bugdet but I'll adjust 🙁

Processor: AMD 3.5 GHz AM3 FX 8320 8 Core Piledriver
Mobo: MSI 990FXA-GD65
RAM : 8GB DDR3 (4x2)


■ Is this setup looks compatible?
■ If making any of above component inferior will have negligible affect on performance/gaming(like buying 970 chip mobo instead of 990) then please let me know so I can save some money ?
■ Any other advice?

Surely gtx 660 is better but for your monitor you need to have a beast card like gtx 780 or hd 7970.

Thanks for the reply but cards that you advice are too expensive, previously I use to play games(at Low to Mid video quality) and watch movies using my HP G62 laptop on my TV using HDMI(with intel core i3 2.53ghz, ATI Radeon hd6300m 1GB, 4GB RAM), it use to work just ok however now I want to try my hands on newer games and play them with much higher fps, I dont want every settings to be at MAX i can adjust with High settings and high fps.

So anyone who is using bigger screen like me may be can throw some light here?

You don't need a crazy graphics card to run any sort of 1080p monitor or tv (I presume that's what you meant by full hd) regardless of the size it is still the same amount of pixels so you will have no trouble running it with a gtx 660. If you don't believe me then watch the performance section of jackfrags how to build a steambox as he runs a big tv with a 7770. Onto your othe ququestion it would be sensible to spend the extra money of a 990fx board only if you are planning high overclocks, the 8320 is a beast once over clocked and/or you are planning for 2 way graphics configurations in the future as the 990fx platform has these features almost exclusively.

Hi Matt,

I have selected 990 mobo because I heard its better compatible with FX processor however I can still use SLI\Crossfire and OC features with 970 mobo example "MSI 970A-G46"
So is it really worth it spending so much extra for 990 mobo else I will choose cheaper 970chip mobo.

Just check reviews before buying to make sure ther is no compatibility issues but if there will be little tangible difference for you between both chipsets then just go for whatever is cheaper so the 970 chipset.
