So today, I decided to play minecraft, and noticed really low fps. When I got this computer, I would get around 160-200 fps on ultra settings. Now, no matter what settings I change, it is always at most only 30 frames on a good day. On battlefield 3 though, I could get up to 70 FPS on ultra settings!

I literally tried everything. I did a clean install of drivers, ran minecraft on the graphics processor, set priority to high in task manager, re-installed minecraft, and yet nothing seems to work. Please Help!!!

Specs
Processor: i7 3770 @ 3.1 GHz and 3.9 GHz Max
Motherboard: MSI Z77A-G45
Ram: 16GB Ballistix Ram
Power Supply: Corsair TX750
Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 660 Ti 2GB SC
Storage: 1TB Hitachi HDD and 128GB M4 Crucial SSD (Using SSD as boot device
OS: Windows 8 Pro

The Graphics card is usually clocked from 900-1000 GHz and 900+ Mn for voltage

I am very desperate as you can see now. If anyone could possibly help me, that would be great!

Solution
When You went and played bf3 you said it was fine right?

Well I have a theory. When I play mc with my gt 610 the screen often has a load of white stocked that appear and dissapear very fast. When I turn on v sync its fine. Now wen I play mw3 my GPU is on fire and is at 1055mhz. So what you need to do I set it to multi core, ensure sli is on, go into afterburner, turn that clock rate up and set your v sync to on and off, and get your GPU good and warm. Yell me how that works for you!!!

First off, thank you for your super fast reply! It is highly appreciated!

As for minecraft and mods, no I do not have any mods installed on minecraft.

I also forgot to mention that I did try using options with minecraft and put everything to low, turned off v-sync on the Nvidia control panel and minecraft options, put max FPS, and multi-core processing. Yet, it did not change a single bit.

Usually when I play minecraft, card temps are usually under 40 degrees Celsius. Yes, minecraft is the only game with this problem. Every other game like battlefield I get outstanding FPS. And I have the most recent drivers (314.22) I even tried beta drivers (320.00) with no change so I changed back. All these processes were completely clean installs.

I don't unfortunately 🙁 could you possibly give me some ideas with optifine on what to do? I could work on it when I get home

Don't worry, we havn't abandoned you 😛

That's exactly when version 1.5.2 came out!

Here's my minecraft with version 1.5.1 + optifine mod to test if 1.5.2 runs slow on your computer.
Back up your minecraft, a folder called .minecraft probably in C:\Users\YOUR NAME\AppData\Roaming, put my minecraft in there and open MCLauncher, click test minecraft to run

And for kicks, here's minecraft with FPS butchering shaders! Equivalent to trying to run crysis 3 on high... If that somehow gets you more fps lol

Shaders make the game look much better though.

Will get version 1.4.7 up for you to test if this doesn't get you more fps.

Unfortunately, none of the options worked.

I tried 1.5.1, and on max settings it was only on 20 FPS max. With optifine options (All on minumum, multi-core processing) it did not budge 1 FPS up or down
Same exact thing with the shaders mod too (I got 1 more FPS lol) and I happened to have a 1.4.7 minecraft folder so i already tested that. Neither of them changed one bit. Both were exactly 20 FPS.
I then proceeded to play 2 different games to test, Battlefield 3 and Mount and Blades. On Battlefield 3, I got 70 FPS on Ultra and 110 FPS on Low. Mount and Blade, I got 90 FPS on max settings and 170 FPS on the lowest settings.

Its funny though because before, Minecraft would be around 170-500 FPS on max settings (300-1000 FPS Low) (with shaders, around 90FPS) and it progressively got slower. One day it was 170-500, then the next, it went down to 30 FPS but then eventually went back up to 170, and now it's just sitting at 20-30 FPS.

Thanks for the suggestions though. And yes, Shaders does make the game look amazing!

Also, what I just did was I turned off my PC, unplugged the PCI-e connectors, unplugged the psu, waited about 30 seconds, replugged the PCI's and then PSU, and Minecraft ran at 240 FPS O__O

Unfortunately, this did not last very long. What I did was I closed the program and reopened it and it went back down to 20FPS.

I then went to Battlefield 3 and it was performing even faster than before! It was at 90 FPS on Ultra! I did a 2nd game and same result! 90 FPS!

But the minecraft thing, on the other hand, it just completely confuses me. I am stumped on what to do now.

You need to do the same thing again unplug reset it all again. This time when the FPS go back up you need to log all your GPU spec. CORE CLOCK,MEM CLOCK,VOLTS,TEMPS,FPS,GPU USE.MEM USE. Then when the FPS fall's back to 20 you need to log it all again if different pls post them. You can do this with msi afterburner
either in game or pause the hardware monitor as soon as you leave game.

Thank you so much for this suggestion! It really showed some differences!
And now for the moment of truth. Here is the records of what went on.

200+FPS__________________________________20FPS
98% Power________________________________36% Power
64 degrees C_______________________________42 degress C
96% GPU Usage_____________________________6% GPU Usage
41% Fan Speed_____________________________45% Fan Speed
1590 Fan Techometer________________________1770 Fan Techometer
1124 Core Clock____________________________784 Core Clock
3005 Memory Clock__________________________3005 Memory Clock
445 MB Usage______________________________361 MB Usage

Very odd results in the end. Yet I am still stumped. The only thing I can think of is the card running on idle maybe?

****By the Way, I do NOT have integrated graphics enabled, so that can not be the case...

Have you tried to update java 32/64 bit?

Also, maybe try this:
1. You need to go into your nvidia control panel, go to manage 3d settings, in the right go to program settings, click add, then you are going to add java, so Locate your javaw.exe (eg : 'C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin' (jre7 for Java 7, 'Program Files (x86)' for 32-bit Java on x64 )), select 'open'.

2. Click apply and you are done.

I have java 64 bit, and it is updated (I believe it is called javaRE 7 Version 21)
and I added javaw and it didnt change anything

OK so what I'm seeing here is that the GPU usage, power, temp, mem usage, has dropped significantly. But fan speed and fan tach are increasing why!! that is the ? we need to figure out.. you were running at 42C fan should have been at Idle??. Ok so this is what we know your video card is taking a dive after a few min of max usage is that correct??. sorry about my spell I'm dyslexic as hell.PS your 20fps stats are not idle stats you mem is maxed gpu is about 3/4 but usage and power is sleeping on the floor for some reason,, I'm looking into this for you now pls post if you fix or find the prob..Thank You

Well my graphics card has auto fan speed corrector. It automatically raises when temperature reach in the low 60s. That answers that question. But I still couldn't find any solution. That's the only thing I can think of that its on idle. And it's fine if your dyslexic because you are super helpful so it doesn't mind me if you don't spell some words right :)

Ironically, all my graphics cards are older (pci-e 2.0+) and I only have 2 other friends with decent graphics cards which are also 2.0+. Mine is a 3.0 slot, so that cant work 🙁But I do have integrated graphics on my processor. Would that work if I take out my graphics card?

No the the MOBO graphics won't work for what I was wanting you to do. K so i am running 2 asus gtx 660ti's
but I don't play mine-craft so I just downloaded and installed set up account and took out one 660ti I belive the version of mine-craft was 1.5.2. it did not max out my 660ti but the fps would jump around form 20 to 160sh.but would stay on the high side for the most part, then the game would glitch and freeze up. so I will do some more testing in the game. it sound to me like your GPU is down clocking for some reason or the Kepler platform is having issues. (Question if you reset everything back to were you fps is back up to norm BUT don't play mine-craft just other games, or run a heaven bench mark will it down clock after awhile. or only when you run mine-craft)???. if you don't have heaven here is the link for download I would just go with the 3.0 version for now..http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2111/unigine-heaven-dx11-benchmark-3-0/mirrors See what happen when you stress out the GPU.
one of us will find out the prob..I find taking my time logging every thing really helps on problem solving. In my case I will get overloaded with info and miss what's right in front of me..

Your PCI-e should be 3.0 but 2.0 compatible.
