So i bought a Nvidia gtx 770 second hand used. All the other parts from the seller work fine and he swears that the chip worked for him. I plugged it into the motherboard and it won't display anything onto the display. But everything works fine from the on-board graphics chip.

I went into a store and they told me that the gpu is a bad card. After, I went into a different store and it didn't work in the first pc they put it in but it worked in the second one. I still have no idea how to get it to work on mine though. I have gotten it to output sound though.

The bios/uefi won't even display when the monitor is plugged into the graphics chip. The fans spin so the power is on. Also, the card won't come up in Device manager.

Methods I have already tried:
-disabling all other gpu drivers
-setting uefi to use PCI-E as primary graphics
-clearing CMOS
-using different gpu on motherboard(worked!)
-checking voltage of power supply(was fine)

System:
Motherboard: Asrock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3
CPU: Intel i7-2600
GPU: PNY gtx 770 2gb(the one with 3 fans)
Power Supply: Coolmax 600W
Storage: Sandisk 240gb Plus SSD

Solution
The problem is always due to the graphic card failure. I have a lot of experience with this problem.
Its simple as this.
1. If you have an external graphic card and you get this problem. Then probably your graphic cards busted.
2. If you have an integrated graphic card and you get this problem. Well, Sorry but its about time you replace your motherboard.
Integrated graphics are not fixable.
3. If its the external problem. Then switch to the integrated graphic card (Thats if you have one) or get a new graphics card either with your warranty (if its valid) or buy one.

Other Solutions

1. (Only for external graphic card holders) This problem is very common due to dust residing on the graphic card/graphic card slot. Just take out the graphic card, and with a paint brush clean the metal parts and the graphic card slot. Be very careful when doing so as this slot are very delicate. Do so at your own risk.
2. This problem may occur if you computer heats up very much.
*Clean up the insides of your Pc with a paint brush at least once a month. (Due to Dust)
*Try hooking up an extra cooling fan to your Pc to reduce the heat.
*Keep your Pc in a well ventilated area such as close to a window.
*If your Pc is a expensive one, try installing a liquid cooling system to it. May at least cost 300$.

Hope this helps

Solution
hi i can see that you have tried quite a lot in your efforts to get it to work

id start by resetting all the bios options to default, the id remove the card from the mobo and clean out the pci-e slots with some compressed air and it seems that the mobo is detecting the card properly and since it isnt showing up properly in your device manager, (are your searching for new devices in device manager "scan hardware for changes" button)

if this doesnt work id also try it in the second pci-e slot and see how that goes. clearly the card works as you said it has been tested, when placing ti back into the system dont be scared to push down on the card firmly to make sure that the card is inserted as good as possible

you can also make sure the all the pci-e finger on the card are free of dust / dirt using some IPA

hope this helps

Hmm.. It did work in one of the pc's though.

I have tried resetting bios settings to default. I can try scanning for hardware but it should still load bios without that. I tried the second PCI slot several times and it didn't work. The other gpu I tried did work in the PCI-E slot immediately though.

If you have another graphics card try putting it in the same pci slot. The pci slot might be bad. O Try put the GTX 770 in another pci slot

Hope this helps :)

I tried it in my other PCI slot and it didn't work. A different graphics chip worked fine in it though.

may be faulty then unfortunately

but they got it working in one of the stores 😛 just not on my motherboard(and yes, it is compatible and it has worked with it before with the previous owner)

This is a very strange issue heres a solution you can see
Now it's possibly a prob with your motherboard, check to make sure the RAM is properly put. Also check whether your power supply is capable of powering your system if the GPU is getting power the fans should work and also u may have an indicator on your GPU which should glow green...

Sorry if I repeated myself

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply! Everything works through the on board graphics chip so it can't be ram/motherboard/etc. 600w is more than enough for it(I had the psu tested as well). And it can't be any other parts since it failed in other systems

I tried it in a different system at pc laptops and it loaded up instantly... so the chip is fine. I'm so stumped :/
