I am fan of amd....
but nvidia gtx970 is bang for buck.
Unless you are looking at resolutions above 2560 x 1600, AMD doesn't gave a horse in the race right now.
I would go with the 970, doing a quick look at benchmarks it seemed to do better, plus it runs a lot cooler than the 290x. And for roughly the same price it's probably the safer bet.

And if you can't wait the 970 is way better then the 290X is the future "proofness" and power efficiency departments ,the 970 is well worth the extra.
But if you can wait for the 960 or even the next gen AMD cards that will set you up for long years of gaming in 1080P.
Edit: the only plus to the 290X over the 970 is that the 290X support Freesync , and Freesync monitors are cheaper then G-sync monitors.
