overwatch does not need any driver updates.

the graphic engine is a joke, it's designed tu run on any computers just like every other blizzard game.

i have YET to ever see a graphically intensive game from blizzard.

till this day I still don't get Nvidia drivers getting updated for every single game being released,

console don't have that problem, developers always codes for the gpu driver

It's just a marketing tool. It's one of the few driver updates that has an installer full of advertisements. Once upon a time, we were actually hungry for driver updates that did things like bug fixes, performance increases, and new features.

you mean amds driver releases?

Can't remember. My AMD product has been EOL for awhile.

Its pretty much necessary for SLI/CFX support. But I agree, completely new driver builds every time a new major release hits the stores is bordering on silly. Perhaps DX12/Vulkan's alternate methods of using multiple gpus can mitigate this issue?

That's because there is only one console gpu to code for, where as there are lots of gpu's for pc's. The reason you get updates for each game is that to get the most performance the driver runs differently for each game.

In the olden days that wasn't the case - there was one driver and it was designed to work the same for everything. That was much more reliable but we pushed gpu makers for more performance so they started tweaking the driver per game (remember quack.exe), that made the drivers 10 times more complex and more likely to crash but gave us a few % more performance. We the buyers care more about slightly higher figures in some review chart then anything else so tbh we force them to do this.

If you are on Windows 10 i feel sorry for you cause Windows 10 is there to f. up every drivers installation.

True, I play all of them and none need/require high end video cards

This is what I was thinking. But then I found their option for changing the resolution (different settings terminology). At it's highest resolution, it put my 770gtx/i74770k to it's knees.

NVIDIA's drivers in a nut shell:

Step 1) Implement GFE profile updates system, so new profiles can be added without necessitating a new driver download/reinstall, and tout this feature as a reason to install GFE.

Step 2) Completely ignore this feature, and force users to download an install huge new drivers every few weeks, essentially just for new profiles. Also force them to reconfigure G-Sync, 3D Vision, Custom display modes, DSR, NVIDIA HDMI Audio out configuration each time as these are not preserved between driver installs.

The only time I've had to reconfigure the HDMI Audio settings is either with a clean install, or if the HDMI Audio driver is updated, which is not often. Its worth noting that similar things occur when the AMD HDMI audio drivers are updated on my AMD box.

As for GFE, i dont think they mean SLI profiles, my guess is that we've gotten to the point with games that pretty much every new game engine in a AAA title necessitates a part of the core driver being patched for AFR-based mGPU to work smoothly (please DX12 mGPU save us!!!!).

Remember, AMD used to have multi-monthly CFX profile updates which were great because you didnt have to install a new driver everytime they got CFX working on a new game, but there's probably a good reason that they discontinued that like 3 years ago.

If nothing else, they are usually essential for SLI support for new games. But I agree, new driver builds every freaking time a new game comes out---perhaps DX12s alternate ways of utilizing multi-gpus can help.

The previous driver update caused thousands of people to lose their OS's and reinstall windows! So no thanks!

After the latest fiasco with the Nvidia drivers which forced a lot of us to reinstall windows - don't update anything until you know it's safe. Thank god I have a NAS and didn't lose 11TB of data.

Ridiculous Nvidia!

Stop lying!!!
