Nvidia on a 144Hz Freesync display?

Will this work using the Adaptive Sync feature in the Nvidia drivers? My long suffering R9 290 is starting to show its age and with Pascal getting close I'm wondering about possibly switching sides for this gen.

There hasn't been a statement regarding Nvidia supporting Freesync yet. They are still trying to push G-Sync monitors which are more expensive.

As they are in a position of market majority share, they don't see a reason to support Freesync, and will not allow AMD a license to use G-Sync. So probably not unless something happens in the display or GPU industry to change market share.

IMO, taking advantage of adaptive sync (Free Sync) is worth staying with AMD. I don't think Polaris is going to be here as soon as hoped. I'd personally sell the r9 290 and get a FuryX, you'll love it with your Free Sync Panel.

Agreed. The difference between Nvidia and AMD is nowhere near the gulf between Intel and AMD. Modern AMD GPUs remain fairly competitive, if a little slow on driver updates. Pascal isn't coming out in commercial markets for at least a year, so AMD's HBM cards remain top tier.
