NVIDIA PhysX on CPU with AMD GPU

I have a XFX AMD 7950 core edition, and a i7 4770k OCed at 4.2 GHZ with a CM Hyper 212 EVO, and I want to use PhysX. My question is, could I run CPU PhysX with that CPU and not burn it/lose too many frames? I noticed some of my games had this thing that said hardware accelerated PhysX, and I looked it up and the results looked cool. And since it is only really particle physics, I was wondering if the CPU version of it could be run on my rig. So in short, can I do it?

You get the PhysX software and drivers from the game itself, so there is no need to install anything other than the PhysX game.

What PhysX games do you intend to play?

There is quite of bit of misleading information on this topic, and generally the rule of thumb is that, unfortunately, you won't be able to enable full Advanced or High PhysX settings with an AMD card. Now, some games will be able to be played with Normal or Medium settings, so you'll have to play around with that. Some games, like Batman: Arkham Origins won't even allow the High PhysX setting with an AMD card. Borderlands 2 has been shown to generally run okay on Medium settings. Really, you need an Nvidia card to enjoy full PhysX effects as they get processed on hundreds and thousands of CUDA cores, rather than your 4 or 8 core CPU.

Well, in that case I guess there is no point in using it. I play my games with near ultra settings and having just one part low quality would bug me. It's annoying how AMD hasn't come up with an alternative, because PhysX looks awesome.
 


LOL OCD? If it doesn't load down your framerate too much, wouldn't low be better then none at all? (If you really want it)
Low doesn't actually reduce visual quality so much, but rather just reduces the number of particles

And I find Physx is just clutter anyway.

Finally, in my case I DID need to install the NVidia physx software to make it work.

I have a 5870 and a Phenom 2 X4 965 and I used CPU based PhysX in Borderlands 2 set to Medium (All others set to the highest, AA disabled and no DOF... cause I H A T E DOF.) . Generally it's OK, but after busier scenes or in areas where there are a lot of environmental PhysX effects your frame rate goes to a slideshow.

Generally as a battle drags on and more debris lines the scene your frame rate will steadily decrease.

If you want good PhysX effects I recommend switching to an NVIDIA card. I'll be doing that now that consoles have caught up and games will start becoming more demanding on the GPU.

Well your CPU is pretty old at this point and certainly a far cry from an i7

I hate dof too. Just makes everything blurry

Physx isn't worth it. Also consoles use amd chili now

they did. in fact the solution should be better than PhysX since it should work on both AMD and Nvidia gpu. but developer are not interested to implement it.
 


it doesn't matter. for the PC version of the game dev still can patch the game with gpu physx given that they were sponsored by nvidia. in fact it doesn't matter what the physics engine the game use. for example the game might use Havoc but they can 'inject' PhysX code into the game to have gpu PhysX effect
