Re above graphics card.

it has 3 connections at the back - which one should I connect to monitor.

tried to attach photo but…

one is a DVI - the other two are display ports

It has a VGA - and I have a display port to vga adapter but I still have a blank screen ?

Is the adapter of the Active variety? (Meaning that you must provide external power to it)

The monitor has vga - usual blue one

Get a DVI to VGA adapter, ive never really had good luck with DP to vga.
