"the original Nvidia Shield launched on July 31, 2014"

Hot darn, the original Shield launched in the future and was sold in the past??

Just kidding, but it is a little typo. :)

A cool device but overpriced. You can get a Vita or 3DS way cheaper with a much better gaming library, the hardcore gaming side of Android is pretty limited to say the least.

My intuition tells me that most people who purchase this device get it for the PC streaming capability.

5 people? For those in the know, SHIELD is by far the best handheld device that's ever been created and the library of games is magnitudes more than any other handheld.

TEGRA games, Google Playstore mobile games(all with gamepad mapper for full controller support), emulators and roms for tons of systems, to include NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, PS and PS2..... AND the ability to stream PC games from steam and origin... all on one full android device that can do more than all this....

If you're into games and you don't have a SHIELD, you're an idiot. lol. Especially since $199 - $300 pricetag is extremely cheap considering how much this handheld offers.

And no, no one who bought the original shield is mad that Gen2 is coming out. SHIELD 1 was so good, I can't wait to buy a gen2 version.

4gb of memory? That's a lot. I wonder if they have plans to port other PC games to android. If they do, they would have something very unique and popular device.

Yea, it's actually more like 12 of us now. But if you're emulating PS2s I thing you likely have a midget alienware and not a SHIELD, SHIELD cant emulate PS2.

and emulation. too bad tegra 4 doesn't meet the proper requirement to run dolphin. if not shield will be perfect emulation device. but TK1 should be able to do it. Dolphin dev that responsible for ARM platform already have working dolphin running jetson TK1 board.

is there work to make PCSX2 working on ARM yet?

http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-3DS-XL-Black/dp/B00E1A1SP6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403704983&sr=8-1&keywords=nintendo+3ds+xl
3ds xl $185 and FAR less power. Games are $20-40 also. They top at at $20 on android. Also this thing does ANYTHING android can do (IE dump your movies or games in 1080p to tv via HDMI, so a portable HD movie player). Not a bad way to browse if needed, where 3ds/vita suck in both these things. R2 can decode 4K (K1 can do 2 4K streams at once as demoed recently, so maybe R2 can do this too), can your vita/3ds do that? Can they stream PC games from in or out of the house? How do they look output to TV? Specs on both suck. Android games have come a long way and the games all the devs (60%) were making last year at GDC will be showing up this xmas. They are not angry birds. Vita's are dead for devs. There isn't a huge library. Metecritic only has about 85 games above a score of 75 and only about 160 total. Not exactly huge and priced far higher than android games. Many of both Vita/3ds titles are just ports from previous consoles from both sides (or collections of ports, sly cooper, jak & daxter etc etc). Vita is $239 at amazon, so not sure where you get them far cheaper than $200.

You clearly haven't been to googleplay store recently or tegrazone. Android has ports too, bard's tale ($2!), half life 2, portal, baldurs gate ($10! top game takes 60-100+hrs to beat it) and considering less than 11mil of any of these sold they haven't been played by the 1.2B units running android. There are easily 100 games I'd like to play on android and all look just like a console.

Tons of great RPG in top paid. Most under $10 except for Square Enix and EA stuff. Most of these were aimed at Tegra3 or below levels. This xmas everything will be aimed at T4, and next xmas 20nm which will make even the low end K1 levels. Real android gaming just took off last year, and now you have tons of stuff that is console like. Ravensword shadowlands, Order of Chaos etc (not to mention actual console ports, final fantasy, 3, 6, etc). For the price of one Vita/3ds game you can pick up a 1/2 dozen great ones on android, actually probably more.

Gameloft etc have a ton of great games. Either you own a junk android device that can't run this stuff or you're just not looking at the store these days.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Gameloft
Gameloft alone has a LOT of stuff I'd play.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/category/GAME_ACTION/collection/topselling_paid
Nearly every game on top paid action titles is under $10, and most under $7. GTA 3, GTA San Andreas, Modern Combat 4 (MC5 on the way looks GREAT!) etc etc all under $7. Gangstar Rio/Vegas, Wild Blood, Asphalt 7+8, Dark Knight Rises, etc.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gameloft.android.ANMP.GloftWBHM
Unreal engine already looks great on these things and again, this is for T3 or below types. Checking 3DS they only have about 85 that score above 75 also. Since I pretty much ignore anything below that on any platform, things already seem pretty even or even favorable for android considering prices of the top games.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.harebrainedschemes.shadowrun
Shadowrun Returns $5...LOL. Full game. I could go on and on.

You're confused :) These games can take up to multiple GB's these days.

Dev interest in Vita <8%, for 3ds <2%. Game devs making games for mobile? 51%! Only PC tops it at 52%. 3DS and Vita are a lost cause compared to mobile going forward. Shield 2 will be well worth the price over time as all these dev's new games pop out. Vita/3ds will be left in the dust. You work for nintendo or sony or something? For the last 2 years the numbers have looked the same (worse last year 60% for mobile). As 20nm hits and units grow to 2B+ you'll see even MORE dev interest because you just can't ignore the numbers of units to sell to and like I said at 20nm power blows up to K1 levels even on the junkers. Which means everyone will be able to run unreal 4 engine games etc. I'd rather be on android and that is even without all the features that come on shield R1 or R2. In just a few android games you've already made up any price differences. $25 at the play store will get you a lot as I already showed and most people haven't played any of the PC/Console ports if you look at sales numbers on them. Most have been played by under 15mil world wide so lots of people would like something like Bard's Tale for $2, Baldur's Gate for $10, GTA3 or San Andreas for $7 or less etc etc. For the current $200 and $25 for cheapo games, you'll get a LOT of fun before spending more. IE Bard's+Baldurs+GTA3+Shadowrun Returns=$24. Not bad for out of the box fun for $200 and this is just an example you'd pick whatever your favorite genre's are I guess. These are all full on PC games, so not sure how you can claim vita/3ds is better even ignoring the specs/features etc of shield.

My only complaint about Shield R2 (if rumored specs are true) is it doesn't come with 32/64GB models. So until they start handing those out I'll pass. Many of the games are well over 2GB now, so 16GB seems pointless. They should at least include options for another $20/40 for 32/64GB models. I think they'd find the 16GB wouldn't sell much if they did this. Unreal 4 engine games will likely clock in at 4GB+ routinely. Granted it will probably have a SD slot, but I'd rather have a cheap option to just get more inside to begin with. Put it in at cost and people will buy more units as most others either kill you on this ($50-100 outrageous), or just give 16GB or worse.

Children now playing more on tablets than 3DS. Writing is on the wall already for 3ds (never mind Vita, dead already, can't get to 10mil) correct? Consoles too not far after 20nm or at worst 14nm.
